More than 130 students will be graduated out of this year’s record breaking student body. At 3:00 p. m., the afternoon of Sunday, May 29, the exercises will get under way with a con cert by the Chowan College Choir. Under the direction of Professor James Chamblee, chairman of the Daniel School of Music at Chowan, the out standing musical group will give a performance of their spring tour program. The concert, to be given in the college audi torium, is not only for the graduates and their families, but also the general public. Baccalaureate Service The baccalaureate service will be held that same evening, at 8:00 D. m., in the auditorium. Dr. Douglas M. Branch, general secretary-treasurer of the Bap tist State Convention of North Carolina, will deliver the ser mon. Dr. Branch is no stranger to the Baptists of eastern North Carolina. In recent years, he was pastor of the nearby Scot land Neck Baptist Church, as well as at the First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount. The dynamic leader of North Caro lina Baptists was the keynote speaker at the banquet in the fall of 1957 which launched the current Chowan College en largement - development p r o- gram. Following the Sunday evening service. Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, Dresident of the college, and Mrs. Whitaker will entertain the candidates for graduation, their families and friends at a re- i ception in the President’s home. Commencement I The commercement activities reach their climax on Monday morning. May 30, when the graduation exercises are held I at 10:30 a. m. in the college auditorium. Another prominent Baptist leader, the Honorable Charles B. Deane, a R o c k- Ingham attorney, will deliver the main address. Mr. Deane, for many years a North Caro lina representative to the Con gress of the United States, was elected last November by his fellow Convention messengers as president of the Baotist Scate Convention of North Carolina. The 1959-60 academic year at Chowan got off to an auspicious beginning when 470 students en rolled for the fall semester. At the beginning of the spring term, 35 additional students en rolled. So, for the first time ever, the total student enroll ment at Chowan soared to over the 500 mark. College oiticials, however, are anticipating that the record es tablished during the 1959-60 school year will be shattered when September rolls around. An additional residence hall for male students is now under con struction on the main campus. The additional housing space it will provide should cause the student enrollment for the forth coming fall term to be well ahead of last year’s total en rollment. BRANCH MR.
