During Religious Emphasis Week many spirited discussions took place on the Chowan campus. Marse Grant, one of the speakers for the week, in a discussion with several Chowan students. Mr, Grant also led a seminar with the faculty of the college. April 20, the Cho wan College Debate Team turned in the finest record of any debate team in the history of the college. At the Randolph-Macon Novice Debate Tournament Chowan fin ished third among 15 colleges and 30 teams, Chowan’s affirmative team composed of Bill Slate and Harvey Sutton, both of Richmond, Va., won third place among the affirmative teams with a 3-1 rec ord, Slate and Sutton defeated the University of Richmond, Randolph- Macon, and Old Dominion College, and lost to the tournament winner, George Washington University. Chowan’s negative team, com posed of Bob Evans, Hampton, Va., and Sam Harahan, Richmond, Va., tied for third place among the negative teams. Evans and Hara han defeated Randolph-Macon and Elizabethtown College, and lost to George Washington University and Princeton University. The loss to Princeton was by one point. For Chowan this was the fifth and final tournament of the year. For Slate, Sutton. Evans and Ha rahan it was their last debate tournament as Chowan students, as all four are sophomores. Sutton and Evans hope to debate next year for the University of Richmond as both will be going there next year. Slate and Hara han also hope to debate at Wake Forest College next year as both will attend that college. Alpha Pi Epsilon Has Initiation The new members of the Alpha Pi Epsilon and the business pro fessors of Chowan were enter tained by the old members of the Alpha Pi Epsilon with a dinner at t h e Tomahawk Restaurant in Ahoskie April 22, 1963. After the dinner, everyone re turned to the college where a candlelight initiation ceremony took place. Elizabeth Wright, president, presided, with Barbara Morrison, vice-president, acting as historian, and Dorothy Hale, secretary and treasurer, acting as pledge mistress. The oath of office was administered to each girl by the president. The Alpha Pi chapter of the Alpha Pi Epsilon, an honorary society composed of three mem bers now has a total enrollment of eleven members. The new members initiated in to the society are: Annette Richards; Peggy Overton; Peggy Rascoe; Patricia Spence; Marian na Warren: Mellie Yelton; Diane Daniel; Frankie Hurdle. For the team and their coach, Professor Calvin Dickinson, the victory marked the end of an up hill battle to improve. In their first full tournament as debaters for Chowan, the team brought back a 4-20 record from the Applachian Debate Tournament, which was held in late November. In their second tournament, the Johns Hopkins Tournament, which was held in early February of this year, Chowan won four and lost eight to very good opposition. In the third tournament, the University of Richmond Tourna ment, which was held in late Feb ruary, Bill Slate and Harvey Sut ton won two and lost four. One loss was by one point to Randolph- Macon College. In late March of this year at the Morgan State Debate Tourna ment, Slate and Sutton received three split decisions over the Uni versity of Delaware, Princeton, and Howard University, and lost to American University. In the Randolph-Macon Tourna ment, Slate and Sutton defeated two teams which had beaten Cho wan in previous tournaments, the University of Richmond and Ran dolph-Macon. Chowan also holds a perfect record against Old Do minion College with three victories and no losses in three tournaments. For the year Bill Slate and Harvey Sutton have a season rec ord of ten wins and ten losses. The college, as well as the stu dents, take great pride in con tinued progress shown by the Chowan debate team this year. CONTESTANT FOR THE NATIONAL SECRETARIAL SCIENCE STU DENT AWARD—Miss Shirley Elizabeth Wright was chosen by the members of Alpha Pi Epsilon to represent their chapter. This na tional recognition will be given to a select member of Alpha Epsilon who has excellent scholarship, personality, character and who has given faithful, outstanding service to her college.
