Viroj Thaicharoen, of Thailand, Studying Graphic Arts Here ''Messiah ” Presented This Week The Chowan College Community Oratorio Society, composed of six ty voices, presented parts of Han del's "Messiah", Tuesday. Dec ember 10. at 8-.no p.m. in the College auditorium. The Oratorio Society is directed Ijy Robert Brown and the accom panists arc Mrs. John Kevelle and Mr. Paul Baumgartner. Soloists are Mrs. William Phil lips. Soprano: Mrs. William Law rence, Contralto: Mr. liobert Wil liams, Tenor and Mr. Marvin Pickard, bass. Mrs. f’hillips is a member of the Chowan College music faculty. She received a B..'\. degree in music from Furman L'niversity and has sung the soprano solos with the Furman Choir in their annual presentation of "The Mes siah" for the past ten years. Mrs. Lawrence is a graduate of Meredith College and was awarded a master of music degree by East Carolina College. She is presently teaching public school music at .\ho.skie High School. She recently toured f^urope with the North Carolina Baptist Chor ale. Mr. Williams is a graduate of High T’oint College and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Sem inary. While a student at the Sem inary Mr. Williams was Tenor soloist at Carrolton Presbyterian Church and St. Charles Presby terian Church of New Orleans. He is now a profes.sor of Religion and mathematics at Chowan Col lege. Mr. Pickard is a former mem ber of the Chowan College faculty and while at Chowan he directed the Oratorio Society. Since leaving Chowan he has been associated wiih the West End Baptist Church in Suffolk. Va.. as minister of music. Do You Wont To Kick The Smoking Habit? BY JEFF SULLIVAN Viroj Thaicharocn, known to his many friends at Chowan as "Wee- Low", comes to Chowan College from Bangkok, Thailand, in orde:- to study Graphic Arts. The young student has a back ground in the Graphic .'Xrts in dustry. and has indicated that this will be his cho.sen field o! work His brother. Chill Thaich- aroen. o.vns and opearales the "Prae Pitlaya Limited Partner ship", General Publisher and Dis tributor. in Bangkok. It was through his older brother's in fluence and guidance, that W'ce- Low made the decision to come to the United Slates to further his education. Viroj received his primary ed ucation at Bangkok Commercial School, a three year high school in Bangkok. Here ho participated in all athletic events, and was a member of the school’s socker and badminton team. Baseball is also fast tiecoming one of his favorite sports. Even though he h;is been in the United Stales for six months. Viroj has no handicap, as far a. speaking I'2nglish is concerned, and has acquired many new friends here. He says that he es- ,)ecially likes the food at Chowan, and speaks very highly of the friendly atmosphere which per- vails on campus.
