Ur. Edgar V. McKnight, assis
tant p.ofessor of religion and
classics at Furman University, has
written an article, “A. T. Robert
son's Career as a Scholar," for
the January-March, 1964 issue of
The Quarterly Review. The Quarl-
erly Review is published by The
Sunday School Board of the South
ern Baptist Convention. Nashville,
Tennessee. It goes to the pastors,
denominational leaders, and others
in the convention.
Acording to The Quarterly Re
view, Dr. Robertson, perhaps more
thrn any other man, influenced
Southern Baptists in their biblical
scholarship during a theologically
formative period beginning in the
late 1800's. Dr. McKnight’s article
describes him from the point of
view of his activities as a scholar.
Dr. McKnight. a native of Wil
son, South Carolina, is a graduate
classes and the remainder enrolled
in evening classes on campus and
extension classes in Roanoke Rap
ids.
White is a native of Colerain,
North Carolina and a graduate of
Colerain High School and Wake
Forest College. He is the manager
of the Belk-Tyler Company in
Rocky Mount, is a stock holder in
the company and serves as secre

Theological Seminary. He has held

Clellanville, S. C. and in Bedford
and Bagdad, Ky. He was a teach
ing fellow at the Southern Theo
logical Seminary and was chap

boro, N. C., from 1960-63. He joined
the Furman faculty in 1963.
He is a member of the Society

esis, and the National Association

The most likely place to find op
portunity is right in the middle of
trouble.
Approximately two years ago
the council for financial aid to
education. New York, revealed
that Chowan ranked fifth in the
United States among prided junior
colleges in alumni support. This
rating is based on the annual
Alumni Loyalty Fund and the con
tributions of the alumni to the
Development Program. There are
indications that this level of giving
by Chowan alumni is being main
tained.
During the past three years
Chowan alumni have increased
their giving to the loyalty fund on
the average of $289.00 per year.
The last year was the best yet
v,’ith a total of $2,417.46 contri
buted by 176 contributors for an
average of $14.00 each. Recent
statistics from the American Alu
mni Council show that, in a sur
vey of 100 schools, 31.8 per cent
of the alumni solicited responded
with donations. The average gift
in these schools was $33.52. Cho
wan’s alumni mailing list contains
2.129 names. Summarily, there
fore, 176 Chowan alumni out of
2129 have contributed $2,417.46 for
an average of $14.00 each contri
butor, which means that 8 per cent
of those solicited responded with
gifts.
The students who attended Cho
wan College carry its message on
their lips and in their hearts and
the number of these messengers
is interesting. We have already
noted that, since 1853, Chowan
College has graduated 2,129. Of
this number 1,177 have graduated
since 1950. Moreover, 932 of the
2.129 have departed this institution
since 1956. An inestimable number
of persons have attended Chowan
College, but have not received dip
lomas or degrees. The graduating
classes are growing every year!
This year, with a record enroll
ment of 967, promises to be the
greatest year in the history of
this great institution.
