Alumni Edition Changes In Chowan CHARLES L. PAUL Charles L. Paul, a graduate of Chowan College, serves on the fa culty of Chowan in the department of Social Sciences, Paul, a native of Davis. N. C., holds the A. A. degree from Cho wan College, the B. A. degree from Carson-Newman College, the Ba chelor of Divinity from South eastern Baptist Theological Semi nary and the Master of Arts degree in history from East Carolina Col lege He has also done additional study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as a graduate a.ssistant at Fast Carolina. The newcomer to the Chowan College faculty was president of the Baptist Student Union during his sophomore year at Chowan At Carson-N'cwman the history major was a member of the Philomathean Literary Society and a member of the International Relations Club He » a s listed in "Who's Who A- mong Students in Amerkan Uni versities and Colleges." He has served in the Marine Corps. Mrs. Paul is the former Jessie Lee Davis, also of Davis. N. C. They have one child. Linda, five months. EDITOR'S NOTE: Returning students will notic* some changes in addition to the ground layout of Chowan College. The most prominent change is that of the membership of the college facul ty. There are fourteen additions to the faculty. Six faculty mem bers from last year will not be returning. Dr. Bela Udivarnoki, formerly chairman of Social Sciences, has retired and he is now professor emeritus. Professor Marrell C. Glover has resigned to continue advanced graduate study at the University of North Carolina. Pro fessor Charles Ridgeway, of the department of Graphic Arts has resigned to study toward the Mas ter of Arts in printing management at South Dakota State University Three faculty members will be away during the ensuing year on leaves of absence. Mr. L. L. Bis hop, Jr., chairman, department of science and mathematics will be studying at Louisiana State Univer sity on a National Science Foun dation Fellowship for one year working toward the completion of a Ph. D. degree in mathematics. Opey D. Jeans will serve as acting chairman of the department of science and mathematics. Mr. James M. Chamblee, Chairman. Department of Music, will study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill toward a Ph. D. in musicology. William Calvin Dickin son will also study at the Itniversity of North Carolina toward a Ph. D. in European History. Brown, who has served as band and choral director at Ahoskie High School for the past 14 years, will replace James Chamblee. Paul Baumgartner will serve as acting chairman of the department of music WILLIAM R. PHILLIPS William R. Phillips of Dalton, North Carolina will join the faculty of Chowan Colege in the Depart ment of English. Phillips served three years in the United States Army Europe Intel ligence School, served in Frank furt. Germany. He graduated from Wake Forest College with the Bachelor of Arts degree in Psy chology and English. He received the Master of Arts in English this past summer. He has also at tended Princeton University and is the co-author of one journal ar ticle in psychology. The F^nglish professor has served as research assistant with the Mary Reynolds Babcock Remed ial Reading Program in Winston- Salem. Mrs Phillips is the former Laura Kay McGee, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. W. K. McGee of Winston- Salem. She has been serving as Minister of Music at the Knoll- wood Baptist Church in Winston- Salem. They have no children. FREDERICK CHARLES JAMES Frederick Charles James, who was born in Long Beach. California and now makes his homo in Carr- boro. N. C., teaches biology. James holds the B. A. degree in •Science from East Carolina College and the Master of Science in edu cation degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During the summer months he has studied in a course in marine in vertebrate zoology in Beaufort. N. C. The new member of the Chowan family has formerly taught in the Norfolk County school system in Chesapeake. Va and servei as a graduate assistant in the Botany Department at the University of North Carolina. Mrs. James, a native of Green ville. if the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hardee She is a grad uate of East Carolina ana has done graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. CLIFFORD S. KOONTZ Clifford S. Koontz, who was born in Ash County and has taught at Ash Central High School for the past 12 years, is the son of Mrs. N. J. Koontz and the late Mr. Koontz. He is married to the former Martha Maijala of Middle River. Minnesota They have one daugh ter. Jarena. age 4. The new Chowan Professor grad- u ted from Lansing High School in Ash County. He holds the B. S. degree in mathematics and science from Appalachian State Teachers College and attended the University of North Carolina at C'h'pel Hill on a DuPont Fellow ship for three summers. He holds the ma ;te” of education degree from the University. He has also attended the Unive sity on Nation al Science Foundation Fellowships. He attended North Carolina State University at Raleigh during the second summer session of 196.'5. Professor Koontz received the Freshmen Chemistry Award at .Appalachian State Teachers College and was a Cum Laude graduate. He served in U. S. Coast Guai'd and was honorably discharged in 1946. ceiving an honorable discharge in 1959. The teacher and athlete is an ordained deacon at Azelea Baptist Church and also serves as superintendent of the Junior Department in Sunday School, leader of the Junior Department in Training Union and as a coun selor for the Royal Ambassadors, a Baptist boys organiiation. Mrs. McGraw is the former Frances Daniels of Norfolk. The McGraws have two children, ages 3 years and 7 months. Mrs. Mc Graw is also a graduate of Maury High School and has attended Old Dominion College. Since graduating from college, McGraw has served as a physical education and health instructor at the Northside Junior High School in Norfolk. Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, in an nouncing the employment of McGraw said, “We take pride in bringing to Chowan College a man of the reported character, ability, and initiative of William McGraw. His coming will give us three coaches representing the primary responsibilities in the three major intercollegiate sports in which the college participates." The other members of the phy sical education department at Chowan are Jerry Lee Hawkins, baseball coach and assistant football coach; and Mrs. Jill Barr physical education instructor for women. WILLIAM P. McGRAW William P. McGraw of Norfolk. Virginia has joined the faculty of Chowan College as head basket ball coach and teacher of physical education. McGraw will work under the direction of the Chairman of the Department of Physical Educa tion. James Garrison and with the other two members of the de partment. He teaches physical education and if the need arises he is qualified to assist in the teaching of biology. A native of Virginia. McGraw graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk. He holds the B. A. degree from the Norfolk College of William and Mary, now Old Dominion College, and is cur rently doing graduate study at William and Mary, toward the Master’s Degree. He has also at tended the University of Georgia. A six feet, seven inch. 200 poun der. McGraw served at his alma mater on the varisty basketball club for four years and on the varsity track and field team. He has served in the U. S. Army, re JACOB LEE STEWART, SR. Jacob Lee Stewart. Sr.. a Baptist from Statesville, has assumed teaching resposibilities in the dep artment of science and mathemat ics. Stewart is a graduate of Western Carolina College with the Bachelor of Science degree. He holds the M.S. degree from the University of Mississippi. He has done additio nal graduate study at the Univer sity of South Carolina, Furman University and the Univesity of Mississippi. He participated in a National Science Foundation Re search Participation Institute In Chemistry at the University of South Carolina where his work was concerned with compiling data on the polarizabilities and molar vol umes of substituted ammonium salts in various solvents. Also, he attended a N.S.F. In-Service In stitute in Physics and Mathemat ics at Furman. His work at the University of Mississippi was done in an N.S.F. Summer Graduate Institute in chemistry and Phyhics. The chemistry and physics teach er has formerly been employed by Gaffney Senior High Shcool in Gaffney. South Carolina, and ser ved as principal of Providence Elementary School in Caswell County. N.C. Mrs. Stewart is a graduate of Cool Spring High School and has attended Mitchell College in States ville. They have two children, Jacob Lee. Jr., who is three years old, and Yvonne, two years old. Faculty ROBERT W. BROWN Robert W. Brown, who has ser ved as band and choral director at Ahoskie High School for the past 14 years, joined the music faculty at Chowan Colege. Brown's responsibilities at Cho wan include the teaching of cours es in music theory, responsibility for the college choir and private voice lessons. In addition he is beginning on a modest basis in itially. the organization and dir ection of a college band. He also teaches private lessons on brass instruments. The musician has recently at tended a Sacred Music Workshop conducted by Fred Warring and Robert Shaw at Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania. The group studied sacred works by such composers as Luigi Zanninelli. Dr. John Raymond and Dr. Earl Wiholit. HARROLD DEAN MOSER Harrold Dean Moser, a Cum Laude graduate of Wake Forest College, holds the bachelor of arts degree, with a major in history, from Wake Forest. He received the M.A. degree in August. The newcomer to the department of Social Science at Chowan is also a graduate of Wingate College in Win gate with the A. A. degree. A nat ive of Kannapolis he is a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Glen Moser of Kannapolis. He has a sister. Joyce, who is a senior at Pfieffer College and one brother. Kenneth, a sophomore at Wake Forest. His professional experience in cludes service as a social studies teacher at Glenn High School in Forsyth County and part-time teaching at Wake Forest while studying toward the M. A. degree. A brilliant student. Moser is a member of Phi Alpha Theta His torical Fraternity, the Eta Sigma Phi Classical Language Fraternity, the Young Democratic Club at Wake Forest, and the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Scholastic Fra- vernity.
