HERMAN W. GATEWOOD Herman W. Gatewood, a native of C'hntham, Va. with 15 years of ex- experience in the printing industry, is tiie new instructor of printing and linotype machine operation in the School of Graphic Art.s at Chowan College. He will replace Charles Ridge way who resigned recently in order to attend the University of South Daliota to study toward the Mast er’s degree in printing manage ment. Gatewood is primarily respon sible for Chowan's monthly pub lication, The Chowanian, and a tab loid daily which is produced as a class project by the students and staff of the School of Graphic Arts. The newcomer lias served dur ing recent years with the .\lta- visla Printing Co. in Altavista, Va. where he was a Sunday School teacher, deacon. Mason, and Jay- cee. He holds life membership in the Virginia .faycees, was out standing Jaycee of 1958 in Alta vista, and is immediate past presi dent of that chapter. The printer is a veteran of the U, S, Army Chemical Corps. •John McSweeny, head of the School of Graphic Arts, said, “We are priviledged to have a man of the outstanding experience and recommendations of Herman Gatewood. His newspaper experi ence should prove to be a valuable asset to the program and work of our department.” CARL H. SIMMONS Carl H. Simmons, a baptist and native West Virginian, is serving on a one year appointment replac ing L. L. Bishop, Jr. who will be studying toward the Ph. D. at Louisiana State University. Sim mons has served for the past five years on the faculty of Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, West Virginia. The newcomer teaches math ematics. He is a graduate of Union University in Jackson, Penn, with a B.S. degree in mathematics and also holds the M.A. degree in Ed ucation from West Virginia Uni versity. The new Chowan math teacher is single, has served in the Naval Keserve for eight years and claims bowling and fishing for his hobbies. Three Granted Leaves JIM G. LEWIS Jim G. Lewis, a native of .Atlanta, Texas, recently served as a gradu ate assistant leaching freshman Engli,sh at Baylor I'niversily. Lewis serves in the department of English. He is a graduate of Bos sier City, Louisana. He holds the B. A. degree in English and history from Baylor liniversity. He re ceived the Master of .Arts degree from Baylor I'niversity in August. The English profes.sor has held membership in the Circle K Club at Baylor and was active in athletics He participated in dramatics and intramural sports and served as an active member of the Ba|>tist Student Union for 3 years. He was president and salutatorian of his graduating class in high school. Mrs. Lew is is the former Emo- gene J. Morris of DeLidder high school where slie participated in band and dramatics. Mrs. Lewis is also a graduate of Baylor Uni versity with a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education. They were married on Janiiary 27, 196,’i. Professor Lewis has responsibili ty for the Dramatics Club at Chowan. MARJORIE RUTH JOYNER Marjorie Ruth Joyner, a native of Murfreesboro, is employed as college nurse at Chowan College. Miss Joyner is a graduate of Murfreesboro High School. A reg istered nurse, she received her medical training at the Johnston- Willis Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond, Virginia. Since 1957 she has been employed by the Richmond Memorial Hospital in Richmond as assistant head nurse and head nurse on the medical- surgical ward in that hospital. At Chowan College she will maintain office hours from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through F'riday, and from 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon on Saturday. She will be on night call in case of emergen cies. She will supervise the oper ation of the infirmary, hold regular sick calls for the students, and maintain a file of health records of current students. We know we can't take it with us, but we wish Uncle Sam would let us lake a little more of it home! JAMES CHAMBLEE Professor James Chamblee was chairman of the Department of Music al the college and was in charge of the touring choir, and diii'cted the choir al the Mur freesboro Baptist Church. A na tive of Raleigh. North Carolina. Chamblee holds the Bachelor of .\rls degree from Ihe University of North Carolina and the Master of Arls in Music from Columbia fniversily. Ch;iml)lee is studying al the Universily of Norlh Caro lina working toward a F’h. I), in Musicology. Mrs. Chamblee is the former Carla Smith of Chapel Hill ;'nd holds Ihe B. A. and M. S. W. from t Nt:. They have recently adopted a daughter. She is five and a half months old and is called Karen Maria. Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, President of Chowan College, at the end ot the last school year, announced the letiremenl of Dr. Bela t'dvarnoki. chairman of the Department of Social Science, and that Dr. Uda- varnoki had been elected by the trustees of Chowan College to be- become Professor Emeritus. President Whitaker said, “We re gret to lose the services of a man of the recognized ability, versati lity, and background of Bela Ud- varnoki—he has served Chowan ef fectively and well along a decade of transition and progress in the life of the college. We extend every possible good wish to Dr. and Mrs. Udvarnoki upon the occasion of his retirement.” Born in Budapest, Hungary, he is the son of the late Andrew Ud varnoki, who was a Baptist minis ter and one of the first theological ly trained ministers in Hungary. Profes.sor Udvarnoki has two sis ters and one brother. His brother is a Baptist minister and is serving in Hungary today. The Chowan Professor Emeritus was graduated from high school and college in Budapest. He spent one year in the University of Hamburg, Germany and then went to the Southern Baptist Theologi cal Seminary in Louisville, Kentuc ky, where he received the Master of Theology and Doctor of Philoso phy degrees. He did additional study at the University of Chicago and finally went back to Hungary where he taught in the Baptist Seminary in Budapest and became President of this institution in 1939. He served as President of the Hun garian Baptist Convention from 1936 to 1939 and was a speaker in the Baptist World Alliance in Berlin in 1934. Udvarnoki returned to the Unit ed Slates in 1947 and visited 17 states as a missionary speaker. The influence of Communism on the po litical scene in Hungary prevented his return in 1948 and he went to Gatesville, North Carolina, as pas tor of the Gatesville Baptist Three Chowan College faculty members have been granted leaves of absence this year to continue their study toward Ph. D.’s. Presi dent Bruce E. Whitaker announced that James M. Chamblee, L. L. Bishop, Jr., and William C. Dickin son were granted leaves of absence by the Chowan College Trustees at the end of the last school year. To Be Missed President Whitaker said, “We will sorely miss the .services of these three men who are among the top faculty members here, but we lake satisfaction in the fact that they are continuing their study to complete Ph. D.'s.” The President added that the college is providing some financial help for each of them in line with the college’s poli cy of strengthening the faculty through additional study and work on Ph. D’s. He also added that re placements for these men have been selected. \ * DR. BELA UDVARNOKI Church where he stayed 3.6 years. Dr. I'dvarnoki .served on the fac ulty of Chowan College since 1952 until his retirement in May of this year. He became a citizen of the United States in 1955. Dr. Bela, as he is known by his many friends, has authored two books in Hungarian and has contri buted 15 articles to publications throughout America. He plans to do more writing and is currently working on several articles. He is widely known as a speaker on in ternational relations. The Hungarian born educator was married first to the former Gilayds Smith of Brookhaven, Mississippi. She was a graduate of Mississippi College and the Louisville Training School. They had three children: Bela, Jr., now a research chemist with Pittsburg Paint and Glass Com pany; Eugene Everrett, now with the Term Plan Finance Company in Greensboro; and one daughter, Mary Ann, who died in February 1945 in Hungary. Mrs, Gilayds Udvarnoki was killed during a bombing raid on December 29, 1944. In 1947 he married the former Ruby Daniel from Ox ford, North Carolina, a missionary to Hungary, Rumania, and Nigeria. Mrs. Ruby Udvarnoki is a gradu ate of Chowan College and the Louisville Training School. She has formerly served as Dean of Women al New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and is currently leaching in the Murfreesboro high school Dr. and Mrs. Udavarnoki plan to remain in Murfreesboro where they now live on Woodridge Drive. Dr. Udvarnoki said, “1 am ready in my heart to return to Hungary, but there isn’t much hope.” He added that, “Hungary is a chal lenging mission field.” He will be available for speaking engagements for churches and civic groups. W. C. Morrisette, Dean of the college, will serve as acting chair man of the Department of Social Science. of Absence WILLIAM C, DICKINSON William Calvin Dickinson, a na tive of Texas, has served on the faculty for two years. He is study ing al Ihe University of North Carolina working toward a Ph. D. in F^uropean History. The profes .sor is the recipient of the M. May Hobertson-Joseph L. Sheppard Loan which is regulated by the Education Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. This Fund is provided to help interest and educate teachers for southern Baptist educational institutions. Mrs. Dickinson, who will be study ing also at UNC toward a Masters degree in Social Work, is the for mer Charlene White of Fort Worlh, Texas. Both are graduates of Baylor University where they received Bachelor- degrees. Pro fessor Dickinson also holds the Master of Arts degree from Baylor fniversily. L, L, BISHOP, JR. L. L. Bishop. Jr. has been with Chowan College for seven years and was serving as chairman of the Department of Science and Mathematics. Bishop holds the Master of Arts degree from East Carolina College and has done additional study al Florida Slate and Clemson College. He is a deacon in the Murfreesboro Bap tist Church, a Sunday School tea cher, and pasl-Presidenl of the Murfreesboro Jaycees. Bishop is studying at Louisiana Stale Uni versity on a National Science Foundation Fellowship for one year working toward the comple tion of a Ph. D. degree in Mathe matics. He expects to finish his course work during this sludy Mrs. Bishop is the former Ann Car'awan of Washington. N. C. and holds the B. S. degree in Home Economics from East Caro lina College.
