Eleven Circle K Members Attend District Convention Eleven Circle K members from Chowan College attended the third annual Carolina District Conven tion held recently at Columbia, S. C. The University of South Carolina Circle K was host club. Eighteen of the twenty-four dis trict clubs were represented by the 108 delegates. Bill Roden, fac ulty advisor and Lloyd Howerton, committee chairman of the spon soring Ahoskie Kiwanis Club, ac companied the Chowan group. Elected to lead the district as governor was Dudley Saleeby of the Citadel who won over Phillip Hart of N. C. State, The Chowan Club sponsored Ed Correll as can didate for lieutenant governor. Eastern Division. He was defeated by Tom Scott of East Carolina College. Conventioners heard addresses by EM Batton, Carolina District Governor of Kiwanis, Leslie Mc Nair, Lt. Governor of the State of South Carolina and Sam Bundy of Farmville, N. C. A welcoming address was given by Dr. Thranas F. Jones, University of South Carolina President. Saturday afternoon the delegates were treated to a delightful re ception at the State Mansion with Mrs. Virginia Russell, wife of the Governor of South Carolina as hostess. The Sunday morning ses sion was held in the beautiful chamber of the state capitol. The Chowan students attending were: Claric Bruce, Lawrence Hol lister, Jimmy Lee, Mickey Spen cer, Thedmon Tart, Ralph Tink- ham, W. G. Willard, Joe Marett, Ken Barnes, Paul Glass and Ekl Correll. Courses To Be Offered Here This Summer By E.C. College Three senior- and graduate- level courses in education will be offered at Chowan College in Murfreesboro in June and July, the East Carolina College Exten sion Division has announced. Dr. David J. Middleton, direc tor of the division, said the series of two-week courses has been scheduled in cooperation with Chowan College. They will be of fered June 8-19, June 22-July 3 and July 6-17. Each course will have 10 three-hour class meetings, scheduled 9 a.m. to 12 noon on weekdays. Registration for each course will be held at Chowan on t h e date of its first class meeting. A student may enroll in either or all of the courses, Middleton noted. "Each course,” he said, “may be used toward renewal of N )rth Carolina A and G teaching certificates when appropriate to the teaching field.” Cost is $32 for each three-hour course, plus cost of the textbook. The courses are identified in the East Carolina curriculum list as "Improvement of Reading In struction in Elementary Grades” (Education 312Ga); "Principles of Guidance” (Education 360G); and "Techniques of Teaching” (Education 415). At Chowan they will be offered in that order. A student must have earned a minimum of 144 quarter hours of undergraduate credit or bold a BA, BS or MA degree to be eligi ble for credit for Education 312Ga and Education 360G. For Education 415, a student must hold at least a baccalaureate degree to be eligible for credit. This course can also apply toward the Master of Arts degree in edu cation upon official admission to the ECC Graduate School, Mid dleton said. At least 20 students will be needed for each course. LONG DISTANCE COMPETITION (ACP) — By connecting phones to short wave sets, the amateur radio club at Seattle University, Seattle, Wash., has enabled stu dents to call home free to many parts of the nation.
