SNEA Important to Teaching Profession student Education Association By Miss Frances E. White The Student National Educa tion Chapter of Chowan College was organized in 1953, at which time it became recognized as a member of both the North Carolina Education Association and the National Education As sociation. Mr. Thomas Ruffin and Miss Frances White were appointed co-advisers at the or ganization of the chapter, with Miss Audrey Marriner as pre sident. The student NEA was estab lished by the NEA Representa tive Assembly in 1957. It re placed the National Future Co-eds to Work With Volunteers Four co-eds from Chowan College have been sriected for the NORTH CAROLINA VOL UNTEERS for the Anti-Poverty Program and will train at Duke University beginning Sunday, June 13. The training program will continue through Sunday, June 17th, at which time the VOL UNTEERS will be transported to their field assignments. The co-eds from Chowan College are: Nancie Allen of Williams- (ton; Kaye Drewry and Faye Drewry (twins) of Franklin, Virginia; and Kay Winfiee of Kinston. Teachers of America as the professional organization for col lege students preparing to teach. The work of the SNEA is an important component of the teaching profession. Membership in the student NEA continues to grow at the rate of approxi mately 15 percent each year. The more than 93 new students combine their efforts with those of the practising NEA members in bringing aoout an indelible interest upon the future instruc tors of the nation. Chowan Chapter The Chowan chapter has en deavored to maintain this inter est through promoting various related activities from year to year. Some of these have been affiliated with the local school— Murfreesboro High School; such as, in observations in the classes in which the student's interest is gauged, whether in the grades or in the departments in the high school. Attendance upon Parent Teachers Associa tion meetings and social func tions in the classroom have con tributed to the development of a peculiar interest on the part of the SEA’ers. Also attendance at the yearly district and state meetings has been a contribut ing factor in further developing a “teacher” consciousness. The members of the local chapter have been represented at these conferences each year since its inception. Representatives In recent years Chowan has KENNETH SMITH Chowan SNEA President had a Miss Representative and a Mr. Representative at the State meetings of the North Carolina teachers. This repre sentation is an honor for the students chosen, as they are selected upon their interest and participation in the activities of the campus organization. Their names are instated in the yearly annual of NCEA. This spring Mr. Kenneth Smith and Miss Patricia Vanderford were the chosen representatives who at tended the Asheville Assembly at which time the twenty-fifth anni\ersary of SNEA was ob served. Miss Glenda Evans and Miss White, the adviser, also attended. At the anniversary luncheon the group had the pri vilege of hearing Dr. Lois Edin- ger. President of the National Education Association. She is a North Carolina native and has always contributed greatly to the profession, holding state of fices before her present position. One of the deep regrets of the local chapter is that so few of the Pre-Education students have joined t h e organization. Probably it has been from lack of knowledge. It is imperative that those going into the teach ing profession align themselves with the chapter that they be come more conscious of their future role and more informed preparatory to their professional activities. The chapter invites each and all of the Pre-Educa tion students to become mem bers in the fall of 1965. The great organization needs you! You need the organization. The 1964-65 officers are: pre sident Kenneth Smith; vice-pre sident Marsha Walton; secre tary Becky Peeler; treasurer Nancy Brown; program chair man Patricia Vanderford and publicity chairman Carol Holt. ■‘What does it take to make a teacher? It takes exactly what it takes in any other profession: it takes specialized knowledge and skills, and it takes dedication to make a teacher.” Dr. Lois Edinger Attend Press Seminar at Chapel Hill The three members of the School of Graphic Arts faculty, Herman Gatewood, John Mc- Sweeney, and Bill Sowell, at tended a North Carolina Press Association Seminar at the Uni- ^^e^sity of North Carolina on May 7 and 8.
