Trustees, Advisors Hold Meeting Approval of a record budget and employment of three ad ditional professors highlighted the semi-annual meeting of the board of trustees of Chowan College Sept. 28 in the office of Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, president. A budget of $2,425,000 was approved for the 1970-71 year. The budget for 1969-70 was $2,265,000. Faculty additions authorized were Miss Shirley Diane Thorne, mathematics; Juan Antonio Huerta, Spanish; and Howard A. Perkins, English. The trustees, meeting jointly with the board of advisors, also heard reports on the need for a new science-engineering facility from Dr. B. Franklin Lowe, Jr., dean of the college, and George Hazelton, acting chairman of the science and mathematics department. The board asked that a com mittee be named to investigate methods of obtaining the facility. The chairmen of the advisory and trustee bodies, Charles L. Revelle, Sr., of Murfreesboro and Irwin Belk of Charlotte, respectively, and Dr. Whitaker were appointed to select the committee in cooperation with the executive committee of the board of trustees. The committee will report to a joint meeting of the trustees and advisors. Resolutions In other action, the board authorized resolutions of ap preciation for Dr. Ben C. Fisher and Miss Arelia Adams. Dr. Fisher, who has served since 1962 as executive secretary of the Council on Christian Higher Education of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, will assume the position of executive secretary-treasurer of the Education Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention Oct. 1. Miss Adams served as bursar for 17 years until her recent retirement. Also discussed was the dedication of South residence hall and the adjacent lake, set for Oct. 24 with Congressman Walter B. Jones as featured speaker. Dr. Whitaker presented his annual report, a review of the previous year’s operation and financial standing of the college. Commended for his service to Chowan and the progress ex perienced under his ad ministration was Dr. Whitaker, who has served as president since May 15, 1957. Among those present was a new member of the advisors. Dr. Edward H. Pruden, pastor emeritus, First Baptist Church, Washington, D. C., now of Raleigh.
