Speakers for May 16 Ceremonies
Chowan College will close its
123rd year with a former Virginia
governor and North Carolina
Baptist minister as speakers at
commencement services to be
held Sunday, May 16 on the front
lawn.
The baccalaureate service will
begin at 11 a.m. and feature the
Rev. T. Robert Mullinax,
executive secretary of the
Council on Christian Higher
Education for the Baptist State
Convention of North Carolina, as
speaker. Others on the program
include Mrs. Betty N. Batchelor
and Miss Rebecca Ann Kin-
namon, professors of English;
Dr. R. Hargus Taylor, chaplain;
and President Bruce E.
Whitaker.
A former U. S. Congressman
and governor of Virginia, Dr.
Colgate W. Darden, Jr. of Nor
folk, will speak at graduation
exercises, to begin at 3 p.m. Mrs.
Clair B. Scott, professor of
chemistry, and Dr. Whitaker will
also be heard.
The Chowan Chorale, under the
direction of James Chamblee,
chairman of the Fine Arts
Department, will sing at both
services. The organist will be
Professor Trelles G. Case.
Dr. Darden developed a
reputation as one of Virginia’s
and the South’s leading
statesmen and educators. After
serving as a member of the
Virginia General Assembly from
1930 to 1933, he was elected to the
U.S. House of Representatives
for the 73rd, 74th, 76th and 77th
Congresses. He served as
Governor of Virginia from 1942 to
1946 before embarking on a
career as an educator. He first
served as Chancellor of the
College of William and Mary
during 1946 and 1947 and then as
President of the University of
Virginia from 1947-1959.
Dr. Darden has also served as
representative of the United
Nations in 1955 and as a member
of the President’s Consultants on
Foreign Intelligence and
member of the President’s
Commission on National Goals.
The speaker at the morning
service, the Rev. Mr. Mullinax,
began his service as executive
secretary of the Council on
Christian Higher Education
March 1. But he is no newcomer
to his adopted state. He received
his education at Gardner-Webb
College, Wake Forest University,
and Southeastern Baptist
Theological Seminary. He has
served as pastor of four Baptist
churches in North Carolina,
Bunn, Saint Pauls, Cary and
Laur inburg.
His denominational service has
been extensive and includes
president of the Robeson Baptist
Pastors’ Conference and
president of the North Carolina
Chapter of Southeastern
Seminary Alumni. He has served
as chairman of the following
groups: The Biblical Recorder
Board of Directors, Mission
Conunittee of Pee Dee Baptist
Association, and Christian S^ial
Action Committee of the Scotland
County Ministerial Association.
A member of the Rotary Club,
he is past chairman of the Ad
visory Conunittee of the Scotland
County Mental Health Clinic.
Mullinax, a native of Cedartown,
Ga., is married to the former
Rachel Smith of Mount Holly.
They have three children.

Jan. 29 meeting of the General
Board of Directors of First Union

Landt replaces C. C. Cameron
CSSO Gives
Course In
Nuclear Work
Nuclear radiation, a familiar
but complex subject, was made
understandable when the Science
Service Organization of Chowan
College Sponsored an “Outline
Course” for the general public,
Wednesday, April 28.
The speaker was George
Hazelton, acting chairman of
Chowan’s science and
.'mathematics department,
winner last spring of one of two
excellence in teaching awards
named by the college. He spoke
at 7:30 p.m. in Marks Hall
auditorium.
Hazelton’s talk, designed to
introduce the public to a topic of
which they have heard a great
deal and which directly affects
their lives. At the same time, the
goal is to explain the subject to
the understanding of the layman.

Landt has been President of
Cameron-Brown Company since
August, 1966, following eleven
years as Executive Vice
President. He was born in Nor
man, Oklahoma, and is a
graduate of the University of
Oklahoma where he majored in
finance and real estate. Prior to
joining Cameren-Brown in 1955,
he was with Massachusetts
Mutual Life Insurance Company
for six years and with Prudential
Insurance Company of America
for three years.
Landt was one of five persons
appointed by the President of the
United States in 1970 to serve on
the Board of Directors for the
Federal National Mortgage
Association. He is a member of
the Board of Directors for: In
vertors Central Management
Corporation; Aerotron, Inc.;
Housing Authority of the city of
Raleigh; Andy Griffith Barbecue
Company; First Union National
Bank of N. C. in Raleigh; and is a
member of the General Board of
Directors for First Union
National Bank of N. C. and First
Union National Bancorp, Inc. of
Charlotte, N. C., and is Managing
Trustee for Cameron-Brown
Investment Group, a Real Estate
Investment Trust.
Landt was honored in 1969
when he was elected “Realtor of
the Year” by the North Carolina
Association of Realtors.
