Japanese Art on Display An exhibition of 40 Japanese prints opened February 5 and ran ttirough Ket>ruary 26 at the Chow’an College Art Gallery: The prints were on'loan from the North Carolina Museum of Art and circulated by the museum as part of the traveling exhibitions program. Funds for the preparation and packing of such shows are provided by the North (,’arolina State Art Society. The prints are the works of 10 Japanese artists who were born before the Revolution and lived through the early 19th century. They are typical of the art form which first came to the attention of the Western artists after Admiral Perry negotiated the treaty in 1854 with Japan. The prints were discovered in the West on papers used by the Japanese to wrap their wares for shipment to Europe. The use of line, color and space in Japanese printmaking techniques is considered to have had much influence on such 19th century artists as Gaugin, Van Gogh, Degas, Sargent and Whistler. Among the prints are fine examples of those produced by Utamaro, Hokusai, Kunisada and Hiroshiga. The prints date from the latter part of the 18th century through the middle of the 19th century when printmaking reached the height of its popularity. Simmons Heads Teacher Group Carl H. Soon she had left the handsprings and cartwheels behind and was perched on the lap of you-know-who. Becky was rewarded with a candy cane and promise of Santa that he’d deliver on her gift list. As for Santa, he said his night had been brightened. Underneath his beard, Santa resembles Chowan student, James Engle of Morganton.
