Lake Vann Location Lake Vann is situated on the south side of the cam pus, encircling the-football stadium and the college maintenance building. The dam of the lake serves as a walkway to Parker Hall, the high-rise dormitory for men. Among the audience for the official naming of the lake as Lake Vann were family members and members of the Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors, who had met earlier in the day. J. M. Jenkins, superintendent of Hertford County Public Schools, addressed the group as family spokesman. He said the influence of George and Alma Vann "upon their church, their community and their families was strong." Jenkins noted that the Vanns "possessed the attributes of Christian citizens and lived lives that were pure and noble. Through over 60 years of married life they remained loyal to their strong beliefs in Christian approach to life." Jenkins said that during their lives they were sensitive to the needs of others, extending help to many different individuals. He also said they played "a strong role in the leadership of the AAeherrin Baptist Church among many other things that made up a continuing effort to make their community wholesome, attractive and enjoyable." Jenkins continued, "It is well that this beautiful lake be made possible by their generosity and love for Chowan College. The tranquility and rustic beauty of this lake shall always serve as a reminder of the feelings George and Alma Vann had for this in stitution." President, Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, em phasized the interest of the Vanns in Christian higher education. He explained that they left Chowan a gift of nearly $60,000 from their estate. Also on the program were the Rev. Clarence Godwin, pastor of Oxford Baptist Church and a trustee, who gave the invocation; Dr. R. Hargus Taylor, chaplain, who delivered the scripture; Dr. Whitaker, who led the reading of the litany of dedication; and Professor Rowland S. Pruette, who offered the dedicatory prayer and benediction. A marker has been erected on the bank of Lake Vann near the tennis courts.
