As a result, many friends the college insist that a “miwttrw mirade” has taken i^ace in the rural, northeastern part sf the State. Fram IMTto 1977 more than $12 million was added to the aaacte of the ccdlege. Seventeen new buildings were con structed. E^oOment climbed to over 1,000. Church support - through the Clooperative Program of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina - foundation, siyiport, annual giving and bequests climbed toward new highs. For the past 19 years, the college has succeeded in (grating in the black. Progress has also touched the human resources of the college. Chowan is known today for its able, dedicated faculty and staff. As for the students, over 85 per cent of (3iowan’s graduates continue their studies at a four-year institution. Many others enter careers upon completion of their academic program at Chowan. Provision of modern facilities for Chowan’s ^udents has tees a nujer ccmcem of Whitaker. With the building oi this facility, Chowan will have succeeded in rounding out the major constructiflB items of the Master Plan. Whitaker’s leadership aMUty has been recognized and tapped by masy different state, re^onal and national educatioaal organizations. He has served as president of the Aaeodatian of Sautfaem Baptist Celeges and Schools, presideat of the North Caralina FoondiitiaB of Chnrch Rdated CoBeges, and president of the National Council of Independent Junior Ckilleges. He is now president-elect of the North Can^a Association of Odleges and Universities; and member of the Board of Directors of both ttie National Association of Independoit Colleges and Universities, and the American Association of Com munity and Junior Colleges. Whitaker’s strongest supporter during his 20 years as (Rowan’s president has been his wife, the former Esther Adams of Conover. Not only does Mrs. Whitaker serve as hostess for a number of recep tions in the president’s home each academic year, but since 1957 she has served as professor in Chowan’s Depart ment of Religion and Philosophy.
