Nine New Members Join
Board of Trustees
Nine new members have been elected to serve four-year terms on Chowan’s
Board of Trustees. They were selected during the annual meeting of the Bap
tist State Convention of North Carolina this past fall.
Four members are joining the Board for the first time. They are Randy V.
Britton, T. L. Craft, Robert Spivey of North Wilkesboro, and Miss Emma G.
Stephenson.

Rev. J. Felix Arnold
. . . Enfield
The new chairman of the Chowan College Board of Trustees is the Rev.
J. Felix Arnold of Enfield. He served as pastor of Enfield Baptist Church
for over 28 years before retiring in July, 1978. He remains active as an in
terim pastor and pulpit supply. Arnold served three previous terms as
Chowan’s trustee chairman.

. . . Ayden
Randy V. Britton. . . Ahoskie
Randy V. Britton is an alumnus of Chowan
College and also attended Campbell College.
He is vice president and general manager of
Carolina Aluminum Co. in Winton.
Britton is active in the community as a
member and past chairman of the Hertford
County Commissioners; chairman of the
March of Dimes for 10 years; vice chairman
of the Roanoke- Chowan Technical Institute
Board of Trustees; member of the Ahoskie
Rotary Club; member of the Hertford-Gates
County Health Board; member of the
Finance Committee of the State Board of
Education; and director for Gaston
Carolina Chamber of Commerce. He is a
member of the Ahoskie First Baptist
Church.
Britton is serving as president of the
Chowan Alumni Association and is a past
member of its Board of Directors. He has
been listed in Outstanding Young Men of
America, Personalities of the South, and
Community Leaders and Noteworthy
Americans.
A Menola native, he lives in Ahoskie with
THOMAS L. CRAFT, JR.
Thomas L. Craft, Jr. of Ayden is associate
superintendent of Pitt County Schools.
Previously he was a teacher in Ayden
Schools and principal of Ayden Elementary
School. The Bethel native received his A.B.
at Duke University and M.A. at East
Carolina University.
Craft is active in the Ayden Rotary Club
serving as a member of the Board of Direc
tors. He is a past tgreasurer, vice president
and president of the organization. He is a
former Jaycee and former member of the
Lions Club.
A member of the First Baptist Church in
Ayden, Craft is a member of the Board of
Deacons and the choir. He has served as a
teacher and superintendent of the Adult
Department in Sunday School and on a
number of church committees.
He is a member of the Division of
Superintendents, NCAE; North Carolina
Association of School Administrators; and
Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity.
Craft is married to the former Nora Lee
Hinnant of Pikesille. They have two
children, Thomas L. Craft, III, 24; and Ned
H. Craft, 21.

18; Malinda, 16; and Michelle, 14
RANDY V. BRITTON
Emma Gay Stephenson . . . Durham
Emma Gay Stephenson of Durham and
Pendleton graduated from Chowan College
in 1931 with an A.B. degree, magna cum
laude. She served as president of the
Student Government at Chowan.
She served 15 years as administrative
manager of the Bureau of Business Ser
vices, School of Business Administration,
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
before her retirement in 1974. Prior to that
she assumed a number of business positions
in North CaroUna and Virginia. She also
served as a teacher in Severn High School
and Williamston High School.
Miss Stephenson is a member of Roberts
Chapel Baptist Church of Pendleton. She
has served as a Sunday School teacher,
organist and pianist with a number of
churches.
She is a charter member of and only
member to receive life membership in the
Durham Woman’s Club. She has served the
organization as treasurer, first vice
president and president. She has served in
many leadership positions within the N. C.
State Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc.
including recording secretary, member of
the Executive Committee and Board of
Directors, and first vice president. She also
held the position of recording secretary of
theN. C. Council of Women’s Organizations.
Miss Stephenson received the Nina
Matthews Silver Tray from the Durham
Woman’s Club for outstanding contribution
as a club member. As a Chowan student, she
was the recipient of the Kiwanis Medal for

highest scholastic average in the freshman
class, Daniels Medal for achievement in
piano, and Jenkins Medal for highest four-
year scholastic average.
The new trustee authored and presented
the early history of Roberts Chapel Baptist
Church in celebration of the church’s
Centennial Anniversary and Homecoming
in 1948.
When not living in Durham, she resides
with her sister, Mrs. Ruth Stephenson
Phillips of Pendleton.
