Alumna is centenarian An Aulander native who lived in Ahoskie 65 years celebrated her 100th birthday this past summer, at a special party in her honor. The centenarian, Mrs. C. C. Hoggard is believed to be the oldest member of the Chowan College Alumni Association, having graduated in 1901. Her husband, the late Charles C. Hoggard, was a trustee of the col lege. During her residency in nearby Ahoskie, she was one of the first two women ever elected to be deacons at Ahoskie First Bap tist Church. She remained a deacon for 25 years. Involved in Church Work Mrs. Hoggard said when her daughter, now Mrs. Mabel Claire Maddrey, was born in 1907, she stayed at home to raise her. But her involvement with church work included an active role in the Women’s Missionary Union. Her involvement with Baptist work has followed a pattern which ran through her family. Her late son-in-law was executive secretary of the Baptist Foundation of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Both of her sisters also attended Chowan and an aunt was a Chowan alumna. Her support of Chowan has been strong through the years. Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker calls her "a pioneer in church and educa tional circles.” “Deep Love” for Chowan He adds that she has “a deep love for Chowan and appreciation for the college’s mission to provide young men and women with opportunities for Christian higher education. We are proud to call Mrs. Hog gard a Chowan alumna and greatly ap preciate her long-standing faithfulness, loyalty and service.” She was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award during graduation exercises in 1979. In commemoration of her 100th birthday, Mrs. Hoggard received birthday cards from Gov. James B. Hunt and President Ronald Reagan. Currently a resident of Mayview Manor, a nursing home in Raleigh, Mrs. Hoggard comments that she "can’t see, and I can’t hear and 1 can’t walk, but the Lord has left me my mind and I’m so thankful for that.” Rocky Mount businessman joins Board of Advisors Alumna marks 100th Birthday Mrs. C.
