'S'- ;*fe" i .>v. Addition for Green Hall Work to transform Green Hall into a modern facility that will provide increosed services for art students was begun this summer, as shown above. The walls of the present building have been bricked. Expansion is con tinuing which will provide an additional 4,000 square feet of spoce for classrooms, studios, art gallery and other uses by the art students. The interior of the present building will be renovated, according to David Parker, direc tor of the Division of Art within the Fine Arts Department. Construction of new addition to Green Hall now underway Convention youth director gives Convocation address Green Hall is undergoing a ma jor expansion and renovation that will provide an additional $4,000 square feet of space of dassroonis, studios, art gallery and other uses for art students. Funds for the expansion were provided from the David Henry Cooper and Jo Piland Cooper Memorial Charitable Trust Fund. In the early 1920’s David Henry Cooper taught at Chowan where he met Jo Piland of Winton, a senior art student at the then four-year women’s college. In 1923 they were married. $250,000 Gift Chowan received $250,000 from the sale of the late couple’s West Virginia Farm and other holding and $100,000 was earmarked for the renovation and expansion. David Parker, director of the Division of Art, said the expansion will provide new conunercial studios and other studio, office and storage space. He said the addi tional space also will enable the Division of Art to move the Art Gallery from its present location in Daniel Hall to Green Hall. Parker said the construction is extending the original two floors (basement and upper level). He exclaimed that Chowan’s students will greatly benefit from the ex pansion and renovation. "It will be advantageous to the art program to have the Gallery and all of the art facilities under one roof,” Parker commented. “The new studios and classrooms will result in increased service to our students and help us attract ad ditional students,” Parker noted. “These enlarged facilities will bet ter serve the larger community as Afell,”he said. Greene, Director, Division of Youth and Campus Ministries, Baptist State Conven tion of North Carolina, delivered the address at the annual Fall Con vocation on August 27, marking the beginning of the 137th academic year in the life of the institution. Held in Helms Center, the con vocation address focused upon the theme: “Education for World Citizenship.” The assemblage of Chowan students and faculty/staff personnel included represen tatives from several foreign coun tries, in addition to the 20-25 states represented in the student body. Numerous Degrees A native of Asheville, Greene holds from Mars Hill College (A.A., 1952); Wake Forest Univer sity (B.A., 1954); Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (B.D.,1957); and UNC-Chapel Hill (M.A., 1969 and Ph.D., 1975) - the two latter degrees with major con centration in Anthropology. He has also engaged in graduate studies at The School of Pastoral Care, North Carolina Baptist Hospital; Yonsei University, &oul, Korea; and Cen tral University, Seoul, Korea. Dr. Greene served as pastor of Arden Baptist Chapel, 1954-57. Thereafter, his career has been devoted to the interests of campus ministry, particularly among North Carolina Baptists. His posi tions of resjjonsibility and leader ship have included the following: Baptist Student Union Director, Appalachian State University, 1957-59; Associate Director, Department of Student Work, Bap tist State Convention of North Carolina, 1959-61; Chaplain, Cen tral University, Seoul, Korea (under appointment by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention), 1961-65; Interim Baptist Chaplain, Duke University, 1967-68; Direc tor, Department of Campus Ministry, Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, 1968-77; and Director, Division of Youth and Campus Ministries, Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, 1977 to the present. Other Experiences He has served, on occasion, as a Consultant on Human Relations and Cross-Cultural Communica tion with the Regenstrief Founda tion, Indianapolis, Ind.; as Instruc tor, Department of Anthropology, North Carolina State University (1975-76); and as an Adjunct Pro fessor of Christian Education, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1977,1979,1981-84). Mike Moyer named wrestling coach Michael William Moyer, a Reading, Pa., native, has been named Director of Lakeside Stu dent Center and wrestling coach. Moyer is a graduate of West Chester State Ck)llege with a B.S. degree in health and physical education. As a member of the wrestling team at West Chester State, he posted a 119-14-0 record and was a NCAA Division I na tional qualifier three years. Before coming to Chowan, Moyer served as a graduate assis tant to the wrestling coach at James Madison University, Har risonburg, Va. He will complete his work on a masters of education in 1985. Janette Colderise to head Sophomore Class for 84-85 Janette Ann Galderise of Elberon, Va., has been elected president of the Sophomore Class for 1984-85. A graduate of Tidewater Academy of Wakefield, she is a printing technology major in the Department of Graphic Communications. Galderise is the daughter of Mrs. Sue P. King, Rt. 1, Elberon. She is a member of Moore’s Swamp Baptist Church. Leon Carlton Burgess, Jr., a graduate of Northampton County High School-East, was elected vice president. He is a pre-education major. Burgess is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Carlton Burgess, Sr., of Rt. 2, Conaway. He is a member of Potecasi Baptist Church. Sybil Lynn Ankrom of Zephyrhills, Fla., is the new secretary. A graduate of Zephyrhills High School, she is a merchandise management major in the Department of Business. Ankrom is the granddaughter of Mrs. Dorothy Ankrom, 9th St., Zephyrhills. She is affiliated with the First Chiu-ch of the Nazarene, Zephyrhills. Karen Leslie Cooke of Virginia Beach, Va., was elected treasurer. She is a Cox High School graduate and a mer chandise mangenment major. Cooke is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virginia B. Cooke, Kings Rd., Virginia Beach.
