Nine new members join Board of Trustees
ROBERT B. SPIVEY
Robert B. Spivey of Windsor has
served one previous term as a
Chowan trustee and advisor.
Spivey is vice president of LADD
Furniture, Inc., and president of
Lea Lumber and Plywood Divi
sion. A Windsor native, he is a Sun
day School teacher and past chair
man of the Board of Deacons at
Cashie Baptist Church.
Bank Director
He is a director of First Union
National Bank, director of CADA,
and a member of the Windsor
Lions Club and Public Industrial
Council.
His past civic service in Bertie
County includes county commis
sioner for 10 years, president of the
Windsor Lions Club, and chairman
of the Mid-East Commission,
Alliance for Progress, and Bertie
County NC 2000. He is past chair
man of the N.C., S.C., Va. Hard
wood Plywood Manufacturers
Association.
Spivey is the recipient of the
Sperry and Hutchinson National
Citizenship Award. He and his
wife, Shirley, have three children,
James Lowell Spivey, Debra
Spivey Jemigan and Gwen Spivey.
His hobby is flying.
WILLIAM C. NORRIS
William C. Norris of Greensboro
has returned to the Board of
Trustees after serving three
previous terms and one term on
the Board of Advisors.
He attended Campbell Universi
ty and took special course studies
at the University of Connecticut
and University of Indiana.

DR. THOMAS J. HEAD, JR.
Dr. Thomas J. Head, Jr., of
Wilmington, has begun his service
as a Chowan trustee. Class of 1988.
A dentist. Dr. Head is a graduate of
Wake Forest University and the
University of North Carolina
School of Dentistry.
He is a member and deacon
(inactive at present) of the First
Baptist Church of Wilmington.
A past president of the Wilm
ington Tri County Dental Society,
Head is a member of the N.C. Den
tal Society and the American Den
tal Association. He is a past
member of the Wilmington
Kiwanis Club.
He is married to the former
Mary Frances Combs of Elkin and
they have two children, Mary
Frances Head and Walter Thomas
Head.
Nine new members have been elected to serve four-
year terms on the Board of Trustees. They were
selected during the annual meeting of the Baptist State
Convention of North Carolina this past fall.
One member , Dr. Thomas Head of Wilmington, is
joining the board for the first time.
Returning to the Board with previous service are
eight members: Randy Britton, Ahoskie; Thomas L.
Craft, Jr., Ayden; E.L. Hollowell, Edenton; N.O.
McDowell, Jr., Scotland Neck; William C. Morris,
Greensboro; Robert B. Spivey, Windsor; Miss Emma
Gay Stephenson, Durham; and. Dr. L. Mack Thompson,
Laurinburg.
He has served as pastor of War-
renton Baptist Church, Warsaw
Baptist Church, and Wakeminister
Baptist Church near Wake Forest.
Thompson is a member of the
Campbell University Board of
Ministers. He served in Warren
County as a member of the Social
Services Advisory Boa’xl and
human Relations Council. He was
a member of the Duplin Medical
Association Board of Directors.
He is past moderator of the
Eastern Baptist Association and
past president of its Pastors Con
ference. He was a trustee at Bap
tist Retirement Homes of North
Carolina. He served on the Trustee
Orientation Committee of the
North Carolina Baptist State Con
vention.
The new trustee is a former
president of the Chowan Alumni
Association. He received the
Stealey Church History Award at
Southeastern Seminary and was
named to “Outstanding Young
Men of America.”
The Raleigh native is married to
the former Carol Corbitt of Po
quoson, Va., who also graduated
from Chowan. They have two
children, Todd, 15, and Claire, 12.
Norris is retired from Jefferson
Standard Life Insurance Company
with the Mortgage Loan Depart
ment. He also previously served
with Fidelity Bank, Durham (now
Wachovia); as senior bank ex
aminer for N. C. Banking Commis
sion; and assistant secretary-
treasurer of First Federal Savings
and Loan, Diu-ham.
A Holly Springs native, Norris is
a past president of the Piedmont
Chapter, Society of Real Estate
Appraisers.
Norris is a member of the Board
of Deacons and Finance Commit
tee and director of the Senior Sun
day School Department at
Greensboro Baptist Church. He is
also a member of the Executive
Cwnmittee of Piedmont Baptist
Association and nominating com
mittee of the Baptist State Conven
tion of North Carolina.
Norris was named the
Distinguished Alumnus of Camp
bell College in 1975. He is married
to the former Kathleen Boney of
Clinton. They have one daughter,
Mrs. Yvonne Carney.
DR. L. MACK THOMPSON
Dr. L. Mack Thompson, pastor of
the First Baptist Church of Laurin
burg, has served one previous
term on the Board of Trustees.
Thompson is a graduate of
Chowan, where he served as presi
dent of the Baptist Student Union
and Ministerial Alliance. He also
graduated from Campbell Univer
sity and received the Master of
Divinity and Doctor of Ministry
degrees from Southeastern Baptist
Theological Seminary.
THOMAS L. CRAFT, JR.
Thomas L. Craft, Jr., of Ayden,
has served one previous term on
the Board of Trustees and Board
of Advisors.
Educational Experiences
Craft is associate superintendent
of Pitt County Schools. Previously
he was a teacher in Ayden Schools
and principal of Ayden Elemen
tary School. The Bethel native
received his A.B. degree at Duke
University and M.A. at East
Carolina University.
Craft is active in community af
fairs. He is a member and past
president of the Ayden Rotary
(^ub. He is a member of the Ayden
Recreation Commission and Men
tal Health Association. Craft is a
member of the church choir, assis
tant Sunday School teacher, and
past member of the Board of
Deacons at Ayden First Baptist
Church.

He is a member of the North
Carolina Association of School Ad
ministrators and served on the
Dental Parent Committee, UNC,
1980-84.
Craft is married to the former
Nora Lee Hinnant of Pikeville.
They have two children, Thomas
L. Craft, III, 29, and Ned Hinnant
Craft, 26. His hobbies are golf and
gardening.
EMMA GAY STEPHENSON
Emma Gay Stephenson of
Durham and Pendleton has served
one previous term each on the
Board of Trustees and Board of Ad
visors.
Miss Stephenson, who was bom
in Portsmouth, Va., and raised in
Pendleton, graduated from
Chowan in 1931 with an A.B.
degree, iiagna cum laude, with
diplonr>a.i in public school music
and puino. She served as Student
Government president. She also at
tended the Walsh School of
Business in Miami, Fla.
Stephenson served 16 years as
administrative manager for the
School of Business Administration,
UNC, Chapel Hill before her retire
ment in 1974.
Wide Experience
Prior to that she assumed a
number of business positions in
North Carolina and Virginia. She
also taught high school English in
Severn and Williamston for nine
years.
Stephenson is a chairman of the
the Board of Trustees and past
first vice president of the North
Carolina Federation of Women’s
Clubs. She is secretary for the
Henry Lee Society, a national
Genealogical society. She holds
honorary life memberships in the
NCFWC and Durham Woman’s
Club, which she served as presi
dent. She authored the history of
NCFWC 1981-82 for its 80th celebra
tion.
Stephenson is a member of
Roberts Chapel Baptist Church of
Pendleton. She has been a member
of the Durham First Baptist
Church Sunday School for 34 years.
Numerous Honors
Her honors include receiving the
Nina Matthews Silver Tray from
the Durham Woman’s Club for
outstanding contributions as a club
member and honorary member
ship in the UNC Alumni Associa
tion.
As a Chowan student, she was
the recipient of the Kiwanis Medal
for highest scholastic average in
the freshman class, Daniels Medal
for achievement in piano, and
Jenkins Medal for highest four-
year scholastic average.
At Chowan, she has served as
vice chairman of the Board of
Trustees and on the Feasibility
Study Committee.
