Golfers capture conference title To compete tor Region X title and NJCAA tourney Chowan’s golf team put together a strong last round in the Eastern Tarheel Conference golf tourna ment in April, to win by 17 strokes, after being down four strokes in the opening round of the 36-hole tournament and secured a berth in the NJCAA Region X tournament. Chowan posted a 636 team score in the two-round tournament, followed by Mt. Olive’s 653, Louisburg's 664 and Lenoir’s 668. Mt. Olive shot a first round 324 to take a four stroke lead over the Braves, who posted a 328 in the opening round. Sowell Gets Award The Braves had already won the regular season championship and, along with adding the tournament title to their trophies this year, Coach Bill Sowell was named the conference’s Coach of the Year. Mt Olive’s Kenny Kirby was tournament medalist, firing a 154 two-round total. Chowan’s Darien Smith was two strokes back with a 156 and Lenoir’sTim Shadle carded a 158. Two other Chowan linksters rounded out the top five golfers in the tournament. Terry Tierney shot a 159 and Hub Galbraith followed by shooting a 160. Two Braves, Greg Armbruster and Tierney, were named to the All-Conference team. The Braves will travel to Fair field Harbour in New Bern for the Region X tournament in May. So far, the only opponents the Braves know for certain they will face are Ferrum and Lenoir, teams they have beaten previously this year. Spartanburg Methodist College could make the field, but indica tions are the usually strong South Carolina team is weak this year. Chance for National Play If the Braves take the Region X title, or place second, they will ad vance to the NJCAA national tour nament to be held at Mirror Lakes Country Club in Lehigh, Florida, in June. Sowell says his team has the talent to take the Region X title, but stopped short of predicting how the team would fare at the national tournament if the Braves advance to the event. Sowell says he is especially proud of the overall record because it included com petition against several four year colleges. Sowell said he was glad to see Darien Smith finish second in dividually in the conference tour nament. “He really put it all together,” the coach said. Sowell related that Smith had been having an off year and doing as well as he did in the tournament might be the boost Smith needed for the upcom ing Region X tournament. Smith is the only sophomore on the team. Durham student wins first place in art contest Michelle Boles of Northern High School in Durham has received the $100 Best in Show cash award in the Chowan College High School Art Competition. A second Northern student, San dra Kelly, was one of five students to receive honorable mention. Two Colonial Beach (Va.) High School students, Katherine An thony and rhris Steffey, have received the $50 second place and (25 third place awards respective ly. Anthony was the only double winner in the competition, receiv ing an honorable mention for a se cond entry. Others receiving honorable men tion awards were Jodi Montanaro of Bergenfield in Hackensack, N. J.; Pamela Albritton of John A.
