Ground II og Day.
Tomorrow is what is known as
ground hog day. The little animal
is supposed to crawl out from his
winter quarters on the 2d of P ebru.
ary, take a peep at the surroundings
and, according to tradition, if he
sees his shadow, he goes back to his
hole to remain for another six weeks,
thereby , indicating that six more
weeks of bard winter weather will
follow. If he fails to see his shad
ow, according to tradition, he re
mains above ground, and six weeks
of fair weather may be expected.
Suppose that on the 2d of Febru
ary the sun is shining brightly in
Goldsboro and the weather is cloudy
in Durham. The Goldsboro people
will say look ont for six more weeks
of winter weather, while our people
will say the winter is over. Better
stick to the goose bone, the fur on
wild animals and the moss on the
trees. -

- CANDLEMAS DAY.
Tne Catholic Church Observes February
2d as a Feast Day.
Tomorrow is what is known in the
Catholic church as Candlemas Day
and as the Feast of the Purification
of the Virgin Mary.
Ibc custom of blessing the can
dles, which was general in the
eleventh century, came down from
pagan timeB, it being the old Roman
habit to burn candles in honor of the
Goddess Februa, the mother of
Mars, for the purpose of scaring
away evil spirits and exercising the
curse of fever.
Candles are brought by Catholic
congregations to be blessed for use
in their own homes and as a contri
bution for the altar, bo that all the
candles to be used throughout the
ensuing year are hallowed on Candle
mas. The candles symbolize "the
light of the world," the one called
by Simon "a light to lighten the
Gentiles."
The Feast of the Purification was
celebrated at Antioch as early as A.
D. 526. Pope Gelasius first estab
lished the feast- in the West by
abolishing the pagan celebration of
the Lupercalia in February, and per
suading the people to accept the
festival of the Purification instead.
The feast became general in the days
of St. Gregory.
