IIK-1IE1! DEBATE.
HE QUESTION WAS WON
BY THE NEGATIVE.
The Speeches Were of a Ilifth Or
der and Well Prepared-Large
Crowd Present.
Craven Memorial Hall, at Trinity
ark, was well filled Friday night
with students of the college, of the
paik community and of this city and
West Durham, lhe occasion was
the Inter Society debate between the
Iesperiah ana Columbian Literary
Societies of the coilege.
Hon. H A. rousheepresiJed over
the exercises of the evening.
The query discussed was, "lie-
solved, That the United States
hould restrict immigration to those
able to read and write the English
anguage and owning property to
the value of fifty dollars."
The Columbian society had the
affirmative, and the Hesperian Soci
ety the negative.
Mr. W. G. Lowderrailk was the
first speaker on the affirmative Bide.
le contended that foreigners did
not make as good citizens in Ameri
ca as our own people; tnat almost
the entire immigration came from
Europe; that the proportion of pau
pers and criminals came from the
foreign class of people, lie con
tended that it would be better to re
strict this class as set forth in the
query.
Mr. W. G. Parker was the hrst
peaker on the negative. The speak
er alluded to the fact of the United
Stales being one of the greatest
countries on the globe; it was made
so by immigration from Europe.
The most skillful and best laborers
n the world have come from this
class. Many men who have become
great in this country of ours did not
have 150 when they landed on our
shores. "
Mr. G. H. Smith, far the affirma
tive, and Mr. J. P. Frizzelle, for
the negative, spoke next in,the or
der named. They made most tell
ing points, and faithfully upheld
their sides of the question.
In the rejoinders, which were lim
ited to six minttes each, the four
speakers got in the most convincing
arguments and made the fur fiy, so
to speak.
At the ciose of the debate, the
judges, Mr. J. Ed. Stagg, Judge R
VV. Winston and Prof. R. L. Flow
era, retired to make up their decis
ion. They were out but a short
time, when they returned and Judge
K. . i . 1 .1 . i . I. . 1
VV inston announced iui me ueuis-
ion was in tavor ot tne negative.
While the best speech was made on
the affirmative side, from an oratori
cal standpoint the negative was en
titled to it. Judge Winston very
gracefully spoke of the high order
of the speeches, and said that we
need not be surprised to see four
new lawyers turned out some day.
Every speaker was 'greeted with
enthusiastic applause, and the colors
of the two societies could be seen
throughout the hall. We have at
tended every one of the inter eociety
debates since they have been held
in Durham, and can truthfully say
that we have never witnessed one
that was more enjoyable, interesting
am? on a higher plane than that of
o t
Friday night.
