By Faculty ot Conservatory Music of The opening concert by the facili ty of the Southern Conservatory of Magic will take place tonight at 8:30 0 clock. A most interesting program has been arranged for the occasion, and will be listened to with interest and pleasure by all who attend. Miss Bernice . Rogers, the new director of the violin, will render some selections. This is her first public appearance in Durham. Our people generally are cordially invited to come out. Making Tomato Wine. A short time ago the Sun had something to say of Dr. R. L. Hoi loway's eight acre tomato field, and that it was his intention to make wine from the crop. This he is now doing, and from present prospects, he expects to make $1,500 or more. Dr. Holloway has started a new in. dustry for this part of the State, and should doubtless prove a paying one. Judge Winston to Speak. Judge R. W. Winston will de liver an address in West Durham tonight at 7:30 o'clock, in the hall over Blacknalrs drug store, tie will speak,in the interest of the Dur ham Building and Loan Associa tion. All, who are intrested in the upbuilding and advancement of the oommunity, are cordially invited to be present. On a Vacation. John Eirkland, one of the car riers of the Durham postoffice, is on his vacation for a few days. He will spend most of it, if not all, here, and the Sun wishes for him a pleasant and, quiet rest. John is one of the most faithful mail carriers in this city, and deserves his vaca tion. , An Elopement In Society. Raleigh is on the que vive. The Morning Post tells us that a dash- 1 1 11 ing young widow ana a gaiiant young society man recently contn- ved to outwit their mends; ran away and were married. All parties are keeping the affair a secret as yet, but there will be a great oorrfmotion in local society when the details of the affair and the names of the prin cipals are made public which will no doubt be eoon. It is freely pre dicted that everyone will know all about the runaway match by the end of the week. A Woman's Recipe. Wilmington Star: Mrs. Coward, of New Jersey, who celebrated the! 102nd annivereity of ber birthday a few days ago, has discovered a re oipe for longevity. It- is "don't worry," but "hustle." She was left a widow many years ago, and had to bustle. There was an aban doned quarry on her little mortgag ed farm, whioh she opened up quarried the rock, and has been do ing it ever since, not ooly making 1 comfortable living, but a respectable bank account. It is learned that $10,000 in sub scriptions of stock to the Chapel Hill and Durham trolly line has been raised in Chapel Hill. The remain ing $5,000 of 'their part will be raised at an early date, it is thought. Work of constructing the line will probably begin early in the spring, if not sooner. In Honor of Miss Walker. Miss Lola Ferrell, of Winston, formerly of Durham, gave a delight ful entertainment Wednesday after- ternoon in honor of her guest, Miss Emma Walker, of New York, at her home in the Twin City. The Demo cratic primaries will be held in Per son oounty tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, to eleot delegates to the Democratic county convention, which meet on Saturday, Sapt. 27th. Application will be made to the Governor for the pardon of Monroe li. Daniel, convicted at the April term of court for keeping a disor derly house and sentenced to the public roads for fourteen months. - Murderer at Large, Jail deliveries are rife in North Carolina just now. Following upon the escape of the prisoners at Eliza beth City comes a similar affair at Trenton, in Jones county. Four prisoners gained their liberty. Among this number was Cyrus Dixon, the white man under sentence of death for the murder of W. A. Webb. Webb was a northern man who came to Jones oounty and mar ried a woman to whom Dixon had been attentive. One night Webb staggered into his house and fell dead exclaiming: "Cy Dixon shot me." He had a gunshot wound in his back. Dixon was convicted but had appealed to the Supreme Court. Answer in Runaway Case. Raleigh Times: C. C. Thomas and Company have filed their an swer to the complaint of Marcellus Green, wherein he seeks $300 dam ages because the horses of the defen dant ran into a buggy occupied by the plaintiff's daughter and injured her. Messrs. Manning and Foushee represent the defendant The de fense is that the harness broke while going down the hill and the horses, after throwing the driver from the wagon, ran away, lne defendant olaims that the company was in no way responsible and that the plain tiff's daughter by carelessness con tributed to the accident. It is said that the Republicans, who have a date for a meeting at the Parrish Warehouse, will doubtless meet early and adjourn before the "inde pendent" mass meeting convenes. While the names of several have been mentioned in connection with the various offices, it is with no de gree of certainty that they can be foretold at this writing. It is thought that whoever is nom inated for the Legislature will be acceptable to the Republicans, pro vided that the nominee agrees to support Pritchard in th6 event of his election. On Ills Way Home. Congressman W. W. Eitchin was in the city this safternoon returning to bis home at Roxboro, after a campaigning tour is Alamance and Guilford counties. He had the lar gest crowd out to hear him at Bur lington night before Ust that he has had there since his joint canvass with Settle.' Last night be spoke in High Point. Tomorrow Mr. Kitchin epeaks at Mt. Tirzah. One Case Thursday. Will Herndon was tried in the police court Thursday on the charge of assault and battery with deadly weapon. The defendent was bound over to the December term of Dur ham Superior Court under a bond of $25. This was the only case on the docket for the day. A Kiss and a Bite. In his volume, "The Kiss rnd Its History," Dr. Christopher Nyrop of the. University of Copenhagen re lates that in England in 183lTho8. Saveland brought an action against Miss Caroline Newton, who had bit ten a piece out of bis nose for his having tried to kiss ber by way of a joke. The defendant was acquitted, and the judge laid it down that when a man kisses a woman against her will she is fully entitled to bite bis nose if she so pleases."
