Letters continued from preceeding page Most of the people who are close to me are exclusively straight, though they accept my sexual tastes with no apparent difficulty. One of my goals during the next couple of years is to develop more friendships with gay men and women. In the meantime, The Front Page has been and remains very important to me. I have taken advantage of the classified ads, which 1 regard as a very good service to the local gay community. But I tend to read the editorial copy in each issue before I read the ads. My personal identification with the gay community seems to be slow in developing— but then, I’m not in a hurry. Eventually I hope to make a personal contribution to the continuing saga of Gay Liberation in North Carolina, a cause I believe in fervently. For people like me, as well as all the married and securely closeted gay people, The Front Page provides a “safe” link with the gay community, without necessarily including discos, show clubs, booze, or ready public identification. m A COUNTRY JOURNAL ® FOR CAY MEN EVERYWHFRF SPRING. Also well served are those many gay people living in rural locations and small towns. For all your altruistic services, I thank you folks very sincerely. 1 would enjoy reading an occasional update on the state of the health and economy of your paper. I read with interest your statement of purpose before you ceased publication—though your troubles saddened me. I was happy when you resumed publication, and from the looks of your ad displays, it would appear that a lot of good organizational leg-work is being done by some unsung hereos. I hope that the gay women of North Carolina will become involved in the work of The Front Page. Surely your paper could provide a good forum for worthy lesbian causes. I like to think of myself as a strong feminist, and certainly all women, gay and straight, have a lot in common with gay men: centuries of oppression by a male-dominated, homophobic society. There are millions of people in this country who prefer to live in a gloriously pluralistic cFEMINAXY A FEMINIST JOURoNAL FOR THE SOUTH Emphasizing the Lesbian Vision FEMINARY is published 3 times a year. To each, her/his own. Live and let live. If we were all to join hands in our common cause, the “Moral Majority” would be seen for what it is: a small group of people frightened by change, frightened by individual differences, whose belief-system can be held together only by including large doses of intolerance, hatred, and the perception of all-pervasive evil. They, of course, have a right to their beliefs, and I to mine. But enough already from the soap box! Keep up the good work, and good luck. G.N. Raleigh, NC Thanks, but. . . Although The Front Page is not know for catching typographical errors (some issues look like we don’t even try, although we do), the following letter has been carefully proofread several times. All spellings are as they appear in the original letter. Dear Editor: After reading The Frount Page for the first time I can honestly say that it is some what boreing. Somehow I never made it through the second page. 1 think in order to have a good news paper you must have instresting subject. Not the same old “crap.” I think it would be quite instresting to interview some Drag Queens. Find out what changed there life. There are alot of Drag Queens that are really good and they are very much apart of the gay community. Also to draw people to othe gay bars why not go to different bars and report on them. What 1 mean by report is that—like the people and how you were treated, music the shows (Etc.). I have talked to many gay people and tell think it would be instresting. So, I would like to join the staff of The Frount Page. 1 would like to do some traveling to different bars and interview different Drag Queens. Now, this The cast of “D.B. Cooper" — Robert Duvall, Kathryn Harrold and, our special guest, Treat Williams. (What kind of mother names her son “Treat” ?) would be on my own free time and money. All I’m asking is let me join your staff and let me try this one time and if it doesn’t work then I’ll never both you, is that not fair? If I’m aloud to join I wil need some identification to show that I’m with The Frount Page. If you think you would like to try this ideal of my let me know by writting to me. Jan Shortt Abingdon, VA Thank you for your letter, your comments and criticisms. In the past. The Front Page has tried to put together a regular column on events in the various clubs across the state. But the effort failed simply for lui k of coordination. I thank you for your offer, but we currently have someone who is helping us with iust such an idea as you mention, covering dab events, the music being played by various D.J.
