A Gay Coloring Book "Well I'm glad you told me about this. Dear...after all, what are mothers for? Now tomorrow we'll take you over to Dr. Lindquist; he'll give you some pills that'll get you interested in men..." In a scene from “The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper, ” Williams prepares to jump from a 727 at 10,000 feet into the North Woods. “My husband and I are very open-minded about you gay people; in fact, we'd love to have you out to the house sometime, but we have the two boys..." Mel Wilkin’s book of cartoons ranges from Christopher Street magazine raunch. Published by the same people who put out newspaper, Impact, this book may not be for all tastes but, if it i: recommended by author Daniel Curzon. irony to Hustler Louisiana’s gay ; yours, it comes — Editor I Cried and Cried and Nobody Cared A Gay Coloring Book by Mel Wiken L&M Productions P.O. Box 52079, New Orleans, LA 70152 $5.00 Reviewed by Daniel Curzon Actually Mel Wiken’s cartoons are too good to be colored on, but she’s willing to let you use your crayolas if you like. There’s more shading and craft than usual in the cartoons in this coloring book, a fact that attests to the cartoonist’s attention to details. The level of draftsmanship is very high. Of course a cartoon stands or falls on its humor, and I’m glad to say that most of the cartoons in I Cried and Cried and Nobody Cared are funny, with the kind of bite that makes them seem serious underneath. Whether mocking straights or gays, Wiken hits the nail on the noggin again and again. ‘Politically Correct’ people may not like her drawings of bull dykes fighting in bars or of a gay man’s seeing-eye dog sniffing out the ass of a potential trick, but the jokes are relevant and spicy. Perhaps Mel Wiken should now turn her talents to other chronicles of modern gay life and aim higher than a coloring book.
