Jt. jk jk Charlotte Fund Raisers by Andy Sidden CHARLOTTE—Two fund-raisers at local bars will benefit the two-month old Charlotte AIDS Relief Fund (CARF), which plans to use the money to help provide transportation and medical costs for patients. To date, one person in Charlotte has been diagnosed with AIDS, but CARF plans to also help others who may be diagnosed in the future. Launched by three men shortly after Mecklenburg County’s first AIDS case was discovered, the fund has already raised more than $2,000. A mid-November event at the Scorpio on Freedom Drive netted about $1,400, the fund’s secretary-treasurer said. An auction at the New Brass Rail on Wilkinson Boulevard brought in more than $700! Fundraising events also are being lined up at Tags on The Plaza and other Charlotte gay bars, Gagner said. Gagner is a former manager of Tags. Two-thirds of the money recently raised will benefit the Gay Men’s Health Crisis center in New York City. The same agency also got $2,500 raised during a summer benefit at the Scorpio. Fund organizers Gagner, chairman Chris Lemmond and vice-chairman Kevin Jochems plan to seek tax-exempt, non-profit status for the fund. “We’re really working hard now,” Gagner said. Eventually, the fund plans to expand its operating committee to five. That will come after winning non-profit status. Until then, the fund will use the mailing address of Queen City Quordinators, the fundraising group for Charlotte gay and lesbian organizations. The address is P.O. Box 22184, Charlotte, N.C. 28222. People interested in working with or making a donation to the fund can call Hugh Gagner at (704) 535-6660. • ‘tonuai!^(yicera in Seehs Volume CHARLOTTE—Queen City Quordmators (QCQ), the local fundraising group, has had a very successful year and plans to continue to offer something for everyone in its 1984 fund raising events. Volunteers are needed to help plan and coordinate these coming events. The group is open to lesbians and gay men equally. Two meetings per month are all that’s required (first and third Thursdays, 8pm in the first-floor SANE Center part of the Labor Building at 2I2S Commonwealth in Charlotte). Each meeting is about two hours long. A dozen or so hours during the year helping to produce events may also be needed. Anyone may attend QCQ meetings and have a say in decisions. However, only board members may vote when decisions reach the . voting stage. Anyone interested in becoming a board member has a chance to do so in January. Eight of the 12 board members will be chosen in January from among persons attending the first January meeting, and all concerned lesbians, gay men and their friends are welcome to attend. Then the eight new directors will join the four delegate directors representing MCC/ Charlotte, Acceptance, the Lambda Political Caucus and the Gay/Lesbian Switchboard of Charlotte in choosing a “quordinator,” assistant “quordinator,” secretary and treasurer from among the 12. Whether you’re interested in becoming a decision maker or just want to volunteer some time, if you want to help raise money for QCQ-affiliated organizations through unusual entertainment, contact QCQ now.
