4 Get Ready For Gay Pride Week! T " JLo commemorate the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village 17 years ago, when patrons of gay bars finally rebelled against police violence, several organizations are planning activities during Gay Pride Week — traditionally the last week in June. Among these is the the second Gay/Lesbian Pride March and Celebration in Durham on Saturday, June 28 of this year. The first March took place in Durham in 1981, after the tragic death of Ron Antonevitch, killed by “queer bashers’’ at the Little River. “Those of us who are working on this event see it as an opportunity for the large gay and lesbian community, and our many allies and friends, to show our strength and diversity — to ourselves, each other, and to our neighbors and fellow citizens,” organizers say. “We also want to take the chance to celebrate our more peaceful methods of growth and survival in the past two decades, as well as educate our neighbors about the obstacles we still face in becoming first class citizens with fully protected human rights.” The following announcements pertaining to upcoming activities related to Lesbian A. Gay Pride Week in North Carolina: Mask Workshop in Durham Saturday, June 7,10*5 Volunteers are needed to help make masks and street theatre puppets for the Pride ‘86 March and Celebration to be held June 28. Here’s your chance to be theatrical and expressive, as well as help our march through the streets. Several types of mask making to be demonstrated from the simple to the complex. Pride ’86 is furnishing major materials, but asking you to bring acyrilic paint, spray paint, yarn, fuzzy materials, sequins, or whatever inspires you. Phone 682-7108 in Durham for directions and to let them know you’re coming. Banner Workshop in Durham Saturday, June 21, 12-5pm A a banner-making workshop is scheduled at the Friends Meeting House (404 Alexander Avenue) in Durham. Lots of signs and banners are needed in our March to let the Triangle know who we are and what we’re about. All groups and individuals thinking about carrying signs or PICNIC SHELTERS RESERVED #3-4-5-9 l This year's Gay Pride Picnic will be in Raleigh’s Pullen Park. Directions are pictured above. For more information, call (919) 833-1209. banners in the march are encouraged to attend the workshop. The idea is to work together and have fun. Some cloth and paper provided. Participants can bring paint, markers, wooden sticks, etc. Please call 682-7108 in Durham to let them know you’re coming (or for directions). Fundraiser for Durham March Sunday, June 8, from 6-1 lpm There will be a fundraiser party at 7th Street (formerly Somethyme) in Durham. The restaurant is located at 1104 Broad Street. All people interested in supporting the March and Celebration are welcome. There'll be an open bar, food, and entertainment. * * * Pride Picnic Needs Sponsors On June 22, the 6th Annual Lesbian and Gay Potluck will be held in Pullen Park in Raleigh. Tentative plans for the picnic include volleyball, music and a softball tournament with teams from Norfolk and, hopefully, Atlanta. Also, all lesbian and gay businesses, groups, and organizations are encouraged to set up a table and bring literature. THF. NFWS Organizers are asking for donations, and point out that expenses are higher this year than last The budget is S800. In order to reach this figure, suggested donations are $30 for businesses, $20 for organizations, and $10 for individuals. AU contributors, if desired, will be listed in an ad for the event in The Front Page, provided they give their written permission by May 30. Checks should be made payable to Willie Pilkington, 611 N. Boundary St Raleigh, NC 27604. In addition to the picnic, the Raleigh group has other events for the week ofJune 21-29. A gay and lesbian film festival on Sunday, June 21; a music night June 23; a public forum of gay religious groups June 24; “Past Caring," a play, on June 25 and 26; and “Plight of the Nellie Queen,” a melodrama, on June 27 and 28;, all of which will be held in Raleigh. There are also tentative (Hans for a combined religious service sponsored by MCC, Integrity .and Dignity on Sunday, June 29 in Raleigh. ♦ * * Chartered Bus From Charlotte QCQ is chartering a bus for the Lesbian and Gay Pride March and Celebration on June 28th in Durham, North Carolina. The price is $10 per person and check or money order can be made out to QCQ, and mailed to P.O. Box 221841, Charlotte, NC 28222 with self-addressed, stamped envelope. The bus will be leaving from Charlotte on the morning of June 28 and returning the evening and is limited to 45 people. Tickets will be on a first come, first served basis. The bus is air conditioned. * * * Carolinian of the Year Also during Pride Week in Charlotte. QCQ will award the “Carolinian of the Year” Award at a banquet on June 25 at Fortuna Chinese Restaurant. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased by mailing check or money order to QCQ, P.O. Box 221841, Charlotte, NC 28222. Nominations for “Carolinian of the Year” will be accepted thru Thursday, June 19. and is open to anyone within North and South Carolina.
