McCain, son of “Mr. and Mrs. Avery McCoin, oi Wbite —_ff.tr. , S head, is now in Germany with the Fourth Army. He writes that he likes his outfit fine and that he lives, in an apartment house where the beds are plenty soft. He also writes that he sees a lot of German civilians and that a $65.00 fine is imposed on any American soldier who is caught talking to them. Sgt. McCoin has been in service for the past seven years. S-Sgt. Wade Choate, of Colum bia Army Air Base, Columbia, S. C., is spending a furlough here with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. P. L. Choate. Pfc. Gidd W. Busic is now back with his outfit in Patton’s Third Army in Germany, after having spent sometime in a hospital ii\ France following an operation. Pfc. Busic, son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Busic, of Piney Creek, has been overseas since last June and was inducted into service in December, 1942. Belk’s Dept.. Store "We Sell It For Less” ,* N. Carolina IN SOUTH PACIFIC Charles Henderson Dough ton, S-1C, of the U. S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Bain Doughton, of Washington, D. C., and formerly of Sparta, has been on a destroyer escort ves sel in the South Pacific for the past year. He entered the navy at Bainbridge, Md., in February, 1944. training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and San Francisco, Calif. His wife resides in Morganton. Pfc. John R. Basic, another son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Busic, writes from Hodge’s First Army, deep in Germany, that he is fine except for the fact that he has been away from home so long. “Bob”, as he familiarly is known, is with an M. P. company and be fore his last trip overseas, had made three crossings, guarding German prisoners of war being brought back to the States. The trips took him to Scotland and North Africa. Since last May he has been serving in England, Wales, Holland, France, Belgium and now in Germany. Pfc. Bu sic is driving a truck carrying supplies to the front lines. S.-Sgt. R. A. Wagoner, Jr., of Columbia Army Air Base, Colum bia, S. C., is spending a furlough here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Wagoner. He has as his guest, S-Sgt. George Nolen, also of Columbia Air Base. Pfc. Gene Blevins is spending a furlough here with his mother, Mrs. Rose Blevins. 1st. Lt. Jack Donnelly was slightly wounded in action near the Belgium border, according to a message received from the war department. Mrs. Donnelly, the former Miss Lorene Reeves, has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Bess Reeves here. Pine Swamp News Mrs. Laura Brown, of Bel Air, Md., is spending sometime with her brother, Maurice Evans, who is improving after a recent attack of pneumonia. Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler Hollo way and children, Betty Ann and Bobby, visited Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Brown, Sunday afternoon. Drug Co. Sparta, N. C. Brothers In Army And Navy Lt. Walter W. Osborne, left, and Elzie Dean Osborne, Cox., of the U. S. Navy, right, are now serving with the U. S. forces overseas. Lt. Osborne, pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress recent ly took part in several air attacks over Germany. He entered the service in May, 1943. Cox. Osborne entered the navy on December 8,1941, and has served in the Southwest Pacific for the past two and one-half years. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lester F. Osborne, of East New Market, Md., and former ly of the Mt. Zion community in Alleghany county. Misses Clyde Brooks, Thelma Estep and Marie Brooks recently spent the night with their cousin, Miss Velma Edwards. Mr. and Mrs. Cary Brown and sons, Dwight and Keith and R. N. Holloway visited relatives in Wilkes county, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Verl Brinegar and John Brinegar, of Wilkesboro, were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Joines. Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Atwood were: Mr. and Mrs. Delmas Kilby and family, of Sparta; Mrs. Grover Adams, Mrs. Conley Caudill, Misses Otis Ad ams, Peggy Adams, Lucille and Betty Davis, L. Andrews, Misses Mona Toliver and Avalee Andrews, Dwain and Edsei Andrews and Raymond Toliver, S-2C, of Bainbridge, Md. Latest estimates indicate that the winter crop of carrots will be the largest on record. Following this is another record spring crop and the two crops come together this month and next. Austin Named v On State Board Of Agriculture Will Represent The Livestock Group; Replates L. L. Burgin • West Jefferson — (Special) — It was learned here this week from official sources in Raleigh that W. B. Austin, prominent Jef ferson lawyer and farmer, had been named by Governor Cherry as a member of the State Board of Agriculture. It is understood that there was only one appointment made at this time, fn this group. Mr. Austin will replace L. L. Burgin, of Horse Shoe, Henderson county, whose term expired. i It was pointed out that Mr. Austin would represent the live* stock interests in the group. He was among those instrumental in the location of the State Test Farm in this" county. This will be de voted chiefly to livestock.
