Department Of Agricul ture Warns Of Increasing Foreign Yields Raleigh—The State Department E Agriculture has urged North arolina tobacco growers to pro uce better quality tobacco this ear and to increase production t general “in order to compete ith stepped up production pro rams in Canada, Cuba and Mexi Frank Parker, the department’s atistician, said that Canada now planning a 22.5 per cent increase i acreage over 1944, and also Ians larger acreages for each rpe of burley grown in that coun y. The proposed increases for ue-cured leaf over 1944 are 20 sr cent. Mexico’s tobacco crop this sea I son is expected to total nearly 66, 000,000 pounds, he said, compar-' ed with 44,000,000 pounds produc ed last season. That country has an average production of 41,000, 000 pounds for the years 1938’ through 1943, Parker said. Increased acreages and favora-1 ble development of the tobacco crop in Cuba are expected to re-; suit in a production of between 70,000,000 and 75,000,000 pounds this season, Parker continued. “Neither North Carolina nor the United States has a corner on j the production of tobacco, and since the economy of North Caro lina is based largely on tobacco, we must keep an alert eye on what other countries are doing with this crop,” he said. Dinner Is Given For Mrs. Wagoner Mrs. J. H. Wagoner, formerly of Alleghany county and now of Ashe, was honored last Sunday when members of her immediate family gave her a surprise birth iay dinner. Sharing honors with Mrs. Wag oner was her little niece, Peggy Sue Warden, who celebrated her first birthday. Those present were Mrs. George L. Warden and daughters, Peggy Sue and Joyce Ann, B. B. War den, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Warden, Mrs. Katherine Warden and Mrs. Ruth Ghoate. The one candle from little Miss Warden’s cake was mailed to her father, who is in the U. S. Navy and could not be present for the celebration. SOCIETY TO MEET The Woman’s Society of Chris tian Service of the Methodist church will meet with Mrs. J. L. Doughton and Mrs. C. R. Allison at the home of Mrs. Doughton toddy. Mrs. Lola Womble, Mrs, Dalton Warren and Mrs. Grover Landreth will be in charge of the program. Woman’s Club To Meet On Friday The Sparta Woman’s Club will meet at the community building on Friday, May 25, at 3:30 o’clock when Rev. E. W. Thompson will speak on “The American Home” from a moral and religious stand point. Hostesses at the meeting will be Mrs. B. O. Choate, Mrs. P. L. Choate and Mrs. Tom No land. Mrs. Wagoner Is Hostess To Group The Lucille Ford Circle of the Sparta» Baptist church met Tues day night at the home of Mrs. Bruce Wagoner with six mem bers present. Mrs. T. R. Burglss had charge of the program on “Consecrating the Centennial to Christ”. Those taking parts were: Mrs. Burgiss. Mrs. J. B. Reed, Mrs, Clennel Richardson, Mrs. Ben G. Reeves and Miss Emoryetta Reeves. Members were reminded by the treasurer, Mrs. Clennel Rich ardson, that the “Money Bags” would be turned in in June. The circle also decided to serve a meal to the Alleghany county rural carriers and their wives on June 1. Following the business session and the program, the hostess serv ed a delicious sweet course and coffee. The next meeting will be held with Mrs. R. L. Hickerson with Mrs. Bruce Wagoner as lead er.
