Piney Creek High School Has Eight In The Graduating Class This Year five Girls And Finals Will Be Held June 8; Class Is Smaller Than Us ual Due To Wartime MAKE GOOD RECORDS The class of 1945 of Piney Creek high school is .smaller than usual, because of the wartime ■drains on students, but the eight 'who are to graduate, have made •outstanding records in many phases of activities as well as "their school work. There are five girls and three boys in the group that will graduate June 8. Many of the seniors have plan ned their careers. Some of these "Will be associated with winning the war and the establishment of world peace. Others plan to pursue their scholastic careers. Presented here are brief sketches of the graduates, togeth er with their aims and ambitions: SUE BROWN The dau#'ter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Brown, Sue was born De cember 29, 1927. Hobbies: Danc ing, skating and reading. Am bition: To become a navy nurse. Voted the silliest and cutest. Mattaz “Take it easy.” LAC RENE N. LANDRETH Laurene is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Landreth and was born August 1, 1927. Hob bies: Dancing, music and art. Voted the best dressed and big gest flirt. Ambition: To become a modern designer. Motto: “To be rather than seem.” TOED ALLISON PUGH The son of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Pugh, Fred was born April 2, 1927. Hobbies: Hunting and fishing. Voted the most hand some boy, best athlete and best dressed. Played on basketball and baseball teams. CAROLINA alike showing good response. A total of $10,000.00 in bonds was sold during the sixth war loan drive with $6,500.00 sold in the present seventh war loan drive. In the Red Cross campaign, $348. 93 was raised by the students and teachers, and more than $250.00 j was donated in the United War | Fund Campaign. Donations to the Infantile Paraylsis campaign, the Junior Red Cross, and the United National Clothing Drive,' bear witness to the fact that Pin ey Creek is all out for victory. The home economics class, has anded the war effort by sewing for the Junior American Red Cross, and dramatics classes have been particularly cooperative by presenting skits and plays at va rious entertainments. In addition, there are more than 180 former Piney Creek stu dents serving on the world bat tlefronts. Of this number, sev eral have given their lives in the service of their country and many have been wounded in action. Their part in the world struggle has been a special inspiration to the girls and boys in school to take a vigorous part in all drives relative to the war effort. Along with other wartime ac tivities, the importance of keep ing well and building strong bodies from proper diet have been stressed. The lunchroom, open ed for the first time this year, has served a record number of meals, all of which have been well planned and balanced. ing. Hob bies: Collecting post cards, pic tures and taking part in athletics. Voted the most versatile, most likely to succeed and the most studious. Ambition: To be a co worker in Christian service. Mot to: “Honest unyielding effort.” EDWARD WOODIE Edward is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Woodie and was born November 21, 1927. Hobbies: Fishing, hunting and working crossword puzzles. Voted the best actor and best sport in class. Flayed on baseball team. Am bition: To become a chemist Motto: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” EDWIN WYATT Edwin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wyatt and was born June 7, 1928. Hobbies: Hunting and fishing. Voted the most studious and most likely to suc ceed. Played on basketball and baseball teams. Ambition: Tc become a chemist. Motto: “Nev er give up.” There is a possibility of de veloping surgical sponges made oi starch that can safely be sewed up in wounds because the spongs material can be absorbed by the body. ers Are Experienced The faculty members of Piney Creek high school are complet ing a successful year under the leadership of J. B. Reed, who has been serving as principal since George M. Van Hoy was forced to ' leave school due to a serious ill-, ness shortly after the Christmas j holidays. Mr. Reed, who has had eighteen years teaching experience, is com pleting his twelfth year at Piney Ureek. He teaches mathematics md history and coaches basket sail and baseball, both the boys md girls. Mr. Van Hoy, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, has spent twelve of his thirty years is a teacher at Piney Creek. Well-known because of his rec ord as a school man and educa tor, he came to Piney Creek from ^irginia-Carolina. Mrs. Gertrude G. Blevins, a graduate of ASTC, teaches French md English. With seven years teaching experience, this is her second year at Piney Creek. Dur ng the various drives in the war jffort, Mrs. Blevins has done a lendid job in furnishing enter nment. She also aids in all tertainment programs given by 5 school. Mrs. G .W. Miller, Jr;, who is istituting for Mr. Van Hoy; is raduate of ASTC. This is her irth year as a teacher and her st year at Piney Creek. Mrs. Her is a graduate of Piney eek high school and a native the community. Wrs. Dick Doughton graduated im Berea College, Berea, Ky., June, 1944. with a B. S. degree home economics. She not on teaches home economics and ence, but is director of physi . education. E. C. Minnich, head of the ag tultural department, is a grad te of VPI, Blacksburg, Va. He s had five years teaching ex rience, three of them at Piney eek. Mrs. Ruth Halsey, the first ade teacher, is a graduate of 3TC. She has had eighteen ars of teaching experience, ven of them at Piney Creek. Mrs. Blanche Osborne, the sec ond grade teacher; attended ASTC. This is her second year of teaching at Piney Creek. She has had fifteen years of teaching experience. Mrs. J. B. Reed, the third grade teacher, attended ASTC. This is her eleventh year as a teacher and her first for Piney Creek. Miss Rachel Halsey, the fourth grade teacher, is a graduate of ASTC. She has a grammar grade certificate A. This is her eighth year of service for Piney Creek. Miss Jean McMillan, the fifth grade teacher, is teaching her ninth year for Piney Creek. Mrs. Kathleen Maxwell, the sixth grade teacher, is a graduate of ASTC. She has had seven years teaching experience, two of them at Piney Creek. Miss Blanche Gambill, the sev enth grade teacher, is a graduate of ASTC. She has devoted eight of her ten years of teaching to , Piney Creek.
