f SPECTACLES •' BY EMORYETTA REEVES ■»•- ■ ■» Don’t believe we’ve heard sc flswjch comment about any one Hhing in Sparta in a long time a: •the cutting of the oak trees ir •front of the Four Oaks Tavern 'The property on which the ole S*otel stands was sold recently and the new owners, Reid Poole and Beale Poole, plan a new building there. This involves tearing down ? the old hotel and cutting the oaks, which has already been done . . S* really seems a shame that the tfine old trees had to be cut. To ■old-timers and young folks alike they are as much a part of the town as the court house, the bank or the drug store . . . they have seen generations come and go; they have weathered the storms of many years and have raised their branches to lofty heights ... but as all things pass, so have three of the oaks. A lone tree, one of the four original Four Oaks stands in the opposite lot, keeping its silent vigil until the time comes for the woodman to swing an axe into its aged trunk. Mrs. H. K. Boyer, who for many years has made her home at the Four Oaks Tavern during the summer months, told us recently when she left Sparta for her home in Char lotte that she was glad she would not be here to see the oaks fall, that it would be like parting with an old friend. On our vacation recently we saw a new motion picture, “Our Vines Have Tender Grapes,’’ the story of a small town and the surrounding countryside of farms and the people that lived and worked there. We remembered a line from that story in which a farmer told his young daughter after she had asked him what he wanted more than anything else in the world that he supposed, above everything else, a farmer would rather have a good barn. . . . We remembered that line when Mack Holloway, of the Pine Swamp section, came into the of fice the other day to tell us about “two of the best barns in the county.” One, a bankment barn owned by Glenn Wyatt and the other a two story barn owned by Arthur j Gambill, two prominent farmers ' of that section, are modern in | every respect, Mr. Holloway de i dares. And he should be one to know, because along with Mack Edwards and Robert Taylor, he constructed both barns.'The Wyatt I barn, a 40x40 structure painted (white, is equipped to take care of 119 dairy cows with a huge hayloft, j in the second story. Both barns i have concrete foundations. “I wish ! every farmer in the county could see these barns,” Mr. Holloway stated and added, “I wish every farmer in the county had a barn just like them.” U. S. Myers, of Laurel Springs, showed us a sheet of music he I had composed the other day. We thought it was fine and compli mented Mr. Myers on the achieve ment until he told us that he could not play a note of music E f . WANTED Chestnut Wood & Tan Bark O. P. A. CEILING PRICES PAID Wilkes Extract Works NORTH WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA . . . and then we almost fell over. The grey-haired Laurel Springs man, who, by the way, writes his own lyrics, can write music and yet he cannot play a piano. Speak ing of not being able to read your own writing . . . well, we’re afraid Mr. Myers qualifies. We dropped in at the Ameri can Legion square dance Satur day night and along with several other spectators were enjoying the “swing your partner,” “ladies in the lead” dance when we beheld a most distressing sight. It the change of partners a bewitching little blonde suddenly found her self without a partner. “Oh, I’ve lost my man, I’ve lost my man,” she cried in dire distress. How ever, some gallant gentleman soon came to her rescue and all was well again. Bill Sprinkle, you all know him, the manager of Kay’s 5 and 10 cent store, was enjoying the mo vies the other day when someone went in to call him out. The boy who was taking up tickets stuck his head inside the theatre and called in a loud voice, “Bill Sprinkler” . . . Bill came out all right . . . and the boy never knew the difference . . . Sorry to lose some Sparta resi dence this week. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Hickerson and daughters, Sarah Ann, Eugenia and Cindy„ have1 moved to Greensboro. We know I we’ll miss them and we hope they remember to come back to visit the home town once in a while. Claude Miles, in addition to man aging the Miles-Waddell-Thomp son Firestone Store here, is run ning a sort of match-making bu reau. Any of you girls who can’t seem to get just the date you want, might see Mr. Miles and we feel quite sure he will be able to fix you up. We peeked at his list of “eligibles” the other day when he wasn’t looking and be lieve us, it was quite a list . . . in fact, we’d say that Mr. Miles could get in touch with almost any unattached man in the county . . . he gave as reference his sec retary, Miss Eula Parsons, and said that anyone who wanted his re cord on match-making could just ask Miss Parsons . . . (Confiden tially, we think Mr. Miles made a mistake there . . . because from all we could gather Miss Parsons was not at all enthusiastic over the match he suggested for her.) By the way, the suggestions Mr. Miles makes, are merely sugges tions . . . nothing compulsory about them. And as far as fees as concerned . . . they run about Right Now We Have A Nice Stock Of living Room and Bedroom Furnishings Come in and make your selection while our stock is complete . . • Living Room Suites Two and Three Piece Designed for Style and Comfort.
