Among those from a distance attending the funeral of Mrs. Sallie Doughton, Saturday, were Clarence Wooten, of Charleston, W. Va.; Kelly Wooten and fami ly Douglas Wooten and Ruth arid Mina Wooten, all of Prince ton, W. Va. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Hardin and Miss Mae Doughton made a busi ness trip to Mt. Airy, Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ben G. Reeves at tended the Bruton-Harpole wed ding at Mt. Giliead, Tuesday. Miss Bruton was a classmate of Mrs. Reeves at Meredith College. Capt. and Mrs. Max, Long, of Lancaster, S. C., and Mrs. E. F. Hinson and daughter, Mary Lee, of Charlotte, were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Duncan. Mrs. Hinson is spend ing the week with Mrs. Duncan. Mrs. Paul Gwyn and Dick Chat ham, of Elkin, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Duncan. Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Mrs. George Cheek and Mrs. Frank Shannon, of Boulder, Col orado, have been spending some time in Elkin with their mother, Mrs Nannie Jones, who recently lelebrated her 93rd birthday. Mrs. Shannon has returned home and Mrs. Cheek is visiting friends and relatives in Sparta. She spent this week with Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Richardson. Mr. and Mrs. Kemp Estep, of Lenoir, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Richardson. Mrs. R. F. Crouse is a patient in the Baptist hospital, Winston Salem, where she is receiving treatment. T. S. Moxley, Gwyn Truitt, R. E, Black and A. O. Joines attend ed the Hereford cattle sale in Boone, Friday. Harry Vaughn and Hoke Mc Millan, have returned to Dayton, Ohio, after visiting here and at Independence, Va. Mrs. Wilborn Goodman is now employed at the B. and T. Drug Company, here. Misses Jessie Gwyn Woodruff and Rose Johnson spent Monday in Winston-Salem. Mrs. R. B. Harrell, of Elkin, is visiting her father, Dr. J. L. Doughton. Dr. Doughton is re covering from a fall he sustained Sunday morning. Rev. F. G. Walker is attending the Baptist Convention in Raleigh this week. Mrs. T. J. Carson spent last week end at Laurel Springs with her brother, Frank Doughton. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hardin, of Mouth of Wilson, Va., were Sun day guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Hardin. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Brown and children, Portsmouth, Va., spent last week end with Misses Alice and Hattie Brown. Miss Marjorie Halsey, of Wash ington, D. Bryan, of Glade Val ley, became the bride of Ernest E. Edwards, Alleghany county Register of Deeds, in a ceremony performed at the Methodist par-, sonage at West Jefferson, last Sunday night, with the Rev. John Jordan, pastor, officiating, ising the ring ceremony. For her nuptials, the bride :hose a dress of powder blue wool Eashioned with a peplum featuring olue rhinestone buttons, long sleeves and a high neckline. She vore black accessories. Mrs. Edwards was graduated Erom Glade Valley high school with the class of ’40, and attend ed ASTC, Boone, and Geyer’s Bu siness College, Charlotte. For the past two years she has been em oloyed by the FBI in Washington, D. C. Mr. Edwards, son of Mr. and j Mrs. Emory Edwards, of Sparta, | is a graduate of Sparta high1 school with the class of ’37, and Droughon’s Business College in Winston-Salem. Before his en trance into the army in 1942, he served as Register of Deeds, fil ling the unexpired term of Tom Gambill. He spent three years in ! military service overseas and was recently discharged. The couple plan to make their home with the groom’s parents for the present. Estep - Conway i i Mrs. Irene Spencer Conway and Kemp Maurice Estep were married Saturday, November 3, at high noon in the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Spencer, of Lenoir, with the Rev. Dr. O. R. Mangum, pastor of the bride, officiating. I Mr. Estep, son of Mrs. Bess C. Estep, of Sparta, and the late Wil born B. Estep, is employed by the Standard Oil Company at Hick ory. He formerly made his home in Sparta. Following the ceremony, a buf fet luncheon was given by the bride’s parents, after which the couple left for a wedding trip to Florida. They will make their home at Lenoir. Out-of-town guests at the wed ding were the, bridegroom’s mo ther; Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Richard son, of Whitehead; Mr. and Mrs. William Nebel, of Charlotte; and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Crawford, of Boone. the Glade Valiev high school fac ulty gave a review on the book. “These Moving Times,” which took the place of the regular pro gram. Mrs. Edwards served a salad course and coffee to twelve mem bers and visitors. Delp and the late Mrs. Delp, Df Piney Creek, became the bride Df Ray Crouse, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Crouse, of Elkton, Md., and formerly of Alleghany coun ty, on Saturday afternoon, No vember 10, at three o’clock, in a ceremony at the home of the Oride’s parents with the Rev. E. B Barton, officiating, using the iouble ring ceremony. The bride was dressed in royal slue with white and black acces sories. Mrs. Edith Trimble, of Wilmington, Delaware, who serv ed as bridemaid, wore yellow with brown accessories. Hoke Crouse served as his brother’s best man. Mrs. Crouse is a graduate of Piney Creek high school and for the past three years has been employed in a defense plant in Maryland. The groom is a grad jate of Calvert high school, Cal vert, Md. Following a brief stay with rel atives and friends here, the cou ple returned to Elkton, Md., where they plan to make their nome. Out-of-town guests at the wed ding included Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Hammer, Delmar Farmer and Hoke Crouse, all of Elkton, Md. Courtesies Are Extended Couple A number of courtesies have been extended Mr. and Mrs. Ray Arouse, who were recently mar ied here. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Reynolds, af Ennice, entertained at dinner, Sunday, honoring the young cou ple. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Fred Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Richardson, Hoke Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. Edith Trimble, of Wil mington, Delaware. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Osborne, af Piney Creek, honored Mr. and Mrs. Crouse at a party at their home Tuesday night, when a group of young people gathered to serenade the newly weds. A number of entertaining games were enjoyed after which Mrs. Osborne served delicious refresh ments. Rector - Whitaker Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Mary Lou | ■ Whitaker, Winston-Salem, daugh- j ter of Mr. and Mrs. Eck Whitaker, j of Sparta, to Ray Rector, son of Mr. and Mrs. Letcher Rector, of Sparta, on Friday, November 9, at the Methodist parsonage here with the Rev. C. R. Allison, pas tor, officiating. The bride has made her home in Winston-Salem for the past several years where she has been . employed. i Mr. Rector, who recently re ceived his discharge from mili tary service, spent 16 months ! overseas in the European theater 'of operations, where he was a member of an ordnance company. He wears four battle stars. He attended Sparta high school. The couple left immediately after their wedding for Akron, Ohio, where they will make their home. Mr. Rector is employed there by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
