Clubs Hold Good Meetings TURKEY KNOB Turkey Knob H. D. club met with Mrs. Fred Osborne on March 8 and an election of offi cers was held with the fol lowing being elected for the com ing year: Mrs. Fred Osborne, president; Mrs. Nannie Williams, Vice-president; Mrs. McDale Kennedy, song leader; Mrs. Bays Parsons, secretary and treasurer; and Mrs. Clarence Kennedy, news reporter. G. M. Tedder Officiating Mrs. Mexa Reeves Phipps, of Sparta, daughter of Mrs. A. F. Reeves and the late Mr. Reeves, became the bride of Robert L. Nichols, son of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Nichols, also of Sparta, in a quiet but impressive Ceremony at the home of Mr. and Mrs. June Tompkins here, March 13, at 6:30 p. m. The vows were spoken in the living room in the presence of immediate relatives and friends of the families. Elder G. M. Ted der, uncle of the groom, officia ted, using the ring ceremony. The couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Nichols, brother and sister-in-law of the groom. Mrs. Nichols wore a suit of grey wool with black acces sories. The bride chose for her nup tials a grey pin stripe wool suit with black accessories. Her hat was a small black straw, featur ing a veil. At her shoulder she placed a corsage of red rose buds. Immediately after the ceremo ny, the couple left for a short honeymoon in Virginia, Tennes see and Western North Carolina. They will be at home in Sparta. Mrs. Nichols, well-known throughout the county, has been clerk of the Alleghany county selective service board since De cember, 1942. Prior to'that time she served as secretary to ■ her' father, who was clerk of cburt for a number of years. A mem ber of the Business and Profes sional Women’s Club, she is also a member of the Sparta Woman’s club and the Wesleyan Guild of the Methodist church. Mr. Nichols, a candidate for sheriff in the Democratic pri mary, 'returned several months ago from 42 months in military service, nine months of which were spent in the Pacific area. He is commander of American Le gion Post 96 of Alleghany county. OSBORNE—RECTOR A quiet wedding took place at the home of Elder and Mrs. S. G. Caudill on March 20, when Miss Rosa Rector, of Whitehead, be came the bride of B. F. Osborne, of Laurel Springs. The bride is the daughter of Thomas Rector, of Sparta. The couple expect to move to Mr. Osborne’s home at Laurel Springs in the near future. MAXWELL RITES ARE HELD AT COX’S GROVE Funeral service for Mrs. Frank Maxwell, 69, colored, was con ducted on Sunday afternoon at Cox’s Grove church in Ashe county with Rev. Emmett Brown in charge. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Maxwell died at her home in Alleghany county on March 15, following a long illness. Surviving are her husband and two sons. March 16 at 7 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Haswell Rector. After the demonstration, which was a special demonstration given by Isom Wagoner, who refinished a chair and Johnny Rhudy Crouse, who demonstrated the upholster ing of a chair, the meeting was carried out in the usual way. Mrs. Andrews is a graduate of Charleston high school and Mr. Andrews has recently returned from two years in ^combat serv ice in the European theater of operations with the U. S. Navy. He was graduated from Naval Carpenter’s School in Provi dence, Rhode Island. Following his release from service he re turned temporarily t« his work at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
