Eisenhower Urges Support
Of Red Cross Fund Drive
The following statement by
General Dwight D. Eisenhower
has been released by the War
Department:
“During the current Red Cross
Fund Campaign vast numbers of
patriotic Americans have respond
ed generously to the cause. Al
ready the majority of chapters
nave reached or exceeded their
local goals. In some communi
ties, however, I understand the
campaign is lagging, and I am
surprised to learn that one of
the reasons given is that com
plaints are being levelled at the
organization’s overseas operations
by returning servicemen.
“For the most part these crit
icisms have grown out of a Red
Cross policy of making nominal
,-harges to our forces for food and
lodgings in fixed Red Cross in
stallations abroad. These com
plaints are distressing to me since
this particular Red Cross policy
was adopted at the request of th<
Army so as to insure an equit
able distribution among all ser
vice personnel of Red Cross re
sources.
“I know the Red Cross. I have
-een it in action. Overseas it per
formed with the precision of a
well trained army. It would be

a grave injustice to the splendid

“In providing millions of pints
of lifesaving blood plasma, thou

ages for prisoners of war, in re
laying countless heart-warming
messages regarding conditions at
home, bringing comfort and en

the Red Cross accomplished a
prodigious task. In Africa, in
England, later on the Continent,
we learned how much it meant

“The services of the Red Cross
