Weather Causing Tobacco Troubles Weather conditions are chiefly responsible for tobacco plants having narrow, thickened leaves and premature buttoning of the crop, according to R. R. Bennttt, Extension tobacco specialist at State College. A number of farmers from va rious sections of the state have been reporting such conditions and have become alarmed, think ing some disease may be re sponsible for the condition. "I have just returned from a trip through many of the tobacco counties,” Bennett says. “In Wil son 1 found tobacco plants scat tered over the field with narrow, thickened leaves and this prema ture buttoning. In one end of the field about one-quarter of an acre was shaded by several large water oaks. Under the shade, where it had been unusually dark, cool, and damp, every plant show ed the described conditions. “Whereas, in the open field, where plants could get some sun light, a small percentage of the plants were abnormal. Most of the buttoning and the narrow, thickening leaves is due to lack of warm sunlight, excess rain, and cold nights and days. “Plants generally • have started off with a poor root system be cause of the presence of abundant moisture after setting. “I would advise frequent cul tivation to aerate the soil and the putting of all the dirt around the tobacco that the crop will stand.” Liberty, Third Sunday, 11:0U a. m.
