Hie Everyday Counselor Rev. Herbert Spaugh, D. D. When is it legitimate to obtain a divorce? A correspondent raise* Uhis question. The answer varies. Practically everyone who seeks and obtains a divorce thinks his reasons are legitimate. As far a3 Civil Law is concern ■ed laws governing marriage and (divorce aie passed by the various states. What is recognized as grounds for divorce in one state are net recognized in another. In Jiorth Carolina, for instance, "while there are a number of rec ognized grounds for divorce, the majority are obtained by two years separation. This correspondent, separated from her husband for a year, ad ariits that she is lonely, and de sires male companionship. At the same time she questions whether she should accept dates as long as she is married to another man, although she is legally separated irom him. She admits that her nusband shows no such compunc tion. If she feels that every means for reconciliation has been exhausted, and that there is no hope for the marriage, then I see no reason why she should isolate herself from men friends. However, if there are children involved, I would recommend that husband and wife honestly try to smoothe out their differences. It has long been my conviction that the majority of divorces would never occur, if the marriage were entered wisely, intelligent ly and with true love and affec tion. If both parties are compat \ From where I sit... Jy Joe Marsh rAre Returning Veterans "Different"? "Well, plenty of them have re turned to our town, and a finer, steadier hunch you couldn’t ask .for. Most of them are back at the same jobs ... going with the same niee home-town girls (get ting married, some of them, and wetting up families) ... renewing the same old friendships. Bna their amusements are ths same. Nothing more exciting than fishing Seward’s creek or pitch ing horseshoes ... enjoying an outdoor barbecue with friendly wholesome beer and pleasant talk. If they’ve changed at all it’s in the direction of maturity and tol erance ... tolerance for everything except dictators, and those who would destroy our democratic principles of live and let live. And from where I sit, that’s another reason to be proud of them. C 1946. UNITED STATES r Suit" 60.'. * rC'.'ND.'T'ON, North Carolina Committe* - ‘■’-.g, Rci^igh, North Carolina. Oct. 26-Nov. 2 Is Set As Apple Week “In these days of acute short ages, it is comforting to know that one inexpensive, nutritious food is plentiful.” M. E. Gard ner, head of the horticulture de partment at State College in mak ing this statement adds that a special week, October 26-Novem ber 2, has been set aside in recog nition of this fact. Naming Hallowe’en, October 31, as Apple Day, the Internationa] Apple Association has revived an old custom which lay dormant during the war years in re-estab lishing National Apple Week. North Carolina’s apple crop, Gardner says, like that in most other apple-producing areas stretching even into Canada, shows prospects of being quite good this year after a poor sea son a year ago. He emphasizes that apples may be used in a num ber of ways in cooking to stretch what otherwise might be skimpy menus due to the severe food shortages this fall. In addition, he says, the apple, long noted for “keeping the doc tor away,” is indeed a nutritious, healthful food. One of its chief values to the human diet is its contribution of Vitamin A. Some varieties of apples have been ible in age, social background and religion, there is good reason to believe that the marriage will be successful. However, if one or both parties of the marriage con tract have objectionable personal habits, such as the drinking of al coholic beverages, there is some considerable probability that drunkenness may be encountered later. Never a week passes that does not bring letters from wives with alcoholic husbands whose homes are falling apart as a re sult of it. All too often marriage infidelity goes along with it. There is no law of the land nor of the Bible which compels a man or woman to live with an unfaithful alcoholic mate. Divorce is cer tainly permissable here. But I can never escape the question concerning such letters, WHY MUST THIS COME UP? WHY WASN’T THE MARRIAGE KEPT IN REPAIR? TO SPEAK SUNDAY Dr. William Crowe, Jr., pas tor of the First Presbyterian church, Wilmington, who will speak Sunday at 8:30 a. m. on “Talking Back to Life.” He will be heard over stations WSOC, WFTF, WSJS and WWNC. Mr. and Mrs. McLeod have both been ill. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Lyons and son recently visited Mr. and found to rate higher than oranges in this necessary nutrient. Vit amin A is essential to the respir atory system of the human body. As with all foods, apples will probably average higher this year than in the years before the war, but because of the plentiful sup ply produced in our own moun tain sections they should be less expensive on North Carolina markets than many other import ed foods, Gardner concludes.
