Mrs. Verdie Shores has return ed to Sparta after having spent sometime in Fries, Va. Mrs. George E. Carson and Mr. and Mrs. Hamby, of Norfolk, Va., were recent guests of Mrs. T. J. Carson. Master Jerry Irwin, five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mack Irwin, has returned from the Duke Hospital at Durham where he was a patient. Mr. and Mrs. James Hash, and children, of Pylesviile, Md., and Mrs. Marvin Caudill, of Aber deen, Md., have returned home after spending sometime with Mr. and Mrs. Traverse McBride and Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Andrews. Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Fender and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Fender had as their guests Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Troy Irvin, of Cambria, Va., Mrs. Ethel Fender, and children. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Morrison and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Brantley Fender. Bettie Jean Fen der and Miss Claribel Fender, of ' Christiansburg, Va. Mrs. Eugene Phipps, and daugh ter, Miss Zenna Mae Phipps, of Independence, Va., were1 guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Mitchell this week. Mrs. Thomas D. Carson, of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. L. Miss Reba Doughton arrived this week from Washington, D. C., for a visit with her father, Congressman R. L. Doughton. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Landreth returned to their home in Wash ington, D. C., after a visit with Mrs. Laura Landreth and Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Thompson. Mrs. Ed Dobbyns, of Rural Re treat, Va., was the week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Duncan. Mrs. Bob Gambill, and daugh ter, Linda, of Wilkesboro, N. C., spent several days this week in Sparta. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Singletary have returned from a brief visit with relatives in Blacksburg, S. C. F. F. Cheek, of Winston-Salem, was the week-end guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Cheek. Lt. T. Wesley Martin and Mrs. Martin, of Fayetteville, were guests of friends and relatives here on Friday and Saturday. Mrs. Bower Watson has return ed from a visit of several days in Winston-Salem. ERNEST LEE MOXLEY, who before her recent mar riage was Miss Alcy Irene Reeves, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn K. Reeves, of Independence, Va. Mr. Moxley is the oldest son of Sheriff Jess Moxley and Mrs. Moxley, of Sparta. Alleghany County Library Now Has Several New Books Alleghany County Library has received, since the first of July, 230 new books for adults and children. Some of the latest books are reviewed below. Mrs. Smith is a graduate of the Sparta high school of the class of 1942 and for some time was employed by the Western Auto Store here. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer A. Smith, of Johnson City, Tenn., and was graduated from the Sparta high school in the same class with his bride. He entered the army in 1942 and spent two years in the European theatre of operations with the 1st infantry division.
