Mrs. G. A. McKinley has re turned to her home in Waynes ville after a visit with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Cheek, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sprinkle, ^ and daughter, spent Sunday with Mr. Sprinkle’s parents near State sville. Mr. and Mrs. Will Pugh, of Tennessee, were guests of rela tives here during the week-end. Mrs. Mart and Mrs. Mac Van Hoy visited their sister Miss Jennie Hudson one day last week. Mrs. Maude Mason, of Washing ton, D. C., is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Black. Pat Burgiss, student at the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hifl, arrived Wednes day to spend the Christmas holi days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Roy Burgiss. Mrs. Ben Shockley, and two daughters, Sandra and Patricia, left Tuesday for North Dakota where they will spend some time with Mrs. Shockley’s parents. Mrs. Glenn Richardson spent last Tuesday in Galax, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Joines, of " Washington, D. C., announce the birth of a son, Russell Frank, on December 3. Mrs. Joines is the former Miss Hazel Jarvis, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Kell Jarvis, of Sparta. Mrs. Wayne B. Waddell spent last Tuesday in Roanoke, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Porter, and children, spent Saturday in Ro anoke, Va. Paul Irwin and M. W. Greene, of North Wilkesboro, Mrs. Myr tle Joines and Mrs. Maude Rich ardson, Miss Mabelline Richard t son and Miss Marianna Burton, both students at Radford college, spent last week-end in Cambria, * Va., with Mr. and Mrs. Troy Ir win. Sam Porter and Reid Hampton made a business trip to Philadel phia last week. Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Horton, Jr, of Greenville, S. C, are guests this week of Mr. and Mrs. Duke Bledsoe. Mr. and Mrs. Bledsoe had as their guests last week, Major B. J. Horton, of Sarasota, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Lundy Fender spent last week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Reid Andrews at Ronda. WMU Hears Mrs. Lillian Bott A real treat was enjoyed by members of Circle No. 1 of the Baptist W. M. U. on Thursday afternoon, when Mrs. Lillian Bott spoke on “How Christmas is Celebrated in Other Countries.” She gave a most interesting de scription of her personal experi ences at Christmas time in a Lon don boarding house, a castle in Scotland, in Berlin and with the Army of Occupation in Coblenz. Mrs. Bott spent four years in Europe, before the first world war as a student and singer, and /was with the Y. M. C. A. dur ing the first war. She was with the army of occupation in Cob lenz in 1923 when our soldiers entertained 10,000 German chil dren. Her description of the four holidays was a vivid study in contrasts. Mrs. C. A. Reeves read the Christmas story from Luke and following this a short business session was held. Delicious re freshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Bott and Mrs. Reeves. Harrell-Wyatt Master Sgt. B. Harrell and Mrs. Harrell, of San Antonio, Texas, announce the engagement of their daughter, Lelia, to Sgt. Jones C. Wyatt, of Fort Sam Houston, Texas, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Wyatt, of West Grove, Pa. No date has been set for the wedding. Sgt. Wyatt has served three Officers Elected By Sparta Women Officers for 1947 were elected at the December meeting of the Sparta Home Demonstration club which was held at the home of Mrs. Charlie Truitt, on Mon day. Miss Beatrice Absher was elected as the new president. Other officers elected to serve with her were Mrs. Glenn Rich ardson, vice president; Mrs. Charlie Edwards, secretary and treasurer. Mrs. Isom Wagoner presided at the meeting and the devotional was given by Mrs. Henry Ed wards. Mrs. Wagoner read a Christmas story and gave an in teresting talk on Christmas dec orations. Delicious refreshments were served. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Al bert Richardson on January 28. FIRST VISIT HERE IN LAST THIRTY-SIX YEARS Mr. Robert Richardson, rail road engineer of Seattle, Wash., who has been away from Alle ghany county since 1911, return ed last week to renew acquaint ances. He was the dinner guest Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Higgins. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Richardson, of Bel Air, Md., Mr. and Mrs. Walter Blevins, Mr. and Mrs. Arzie Cau dill, of Galax, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Greene, Mrs. Zillie Evans, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Combs, of Ennice. In the afternoon, Mrs. Peggie Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. Delmas Kilby, of Sparta, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Andrews, of N. Wilkes boro, Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Fra zier, of Richmond, Va., Mr. E. J. Richardson and Miss Lucy Jean Irwin, of Galax, stopped to visit with Mr. Richardson. and one half years with the med ical corps of the U. S. Army in both the European and Pacific theatres of war. He is now with the Fourth Army but expects to be discharged soon. He is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Wyatt, of Piney Creek, N. C. Miss Wyatt, Mr. Irwin Wed Tues. Vows Are Spoken In Double Bing Ceremony At Sparta Baptist Church In b wedding of beauty and simplicity, Miss Madge Wyatt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Wyatt, became the bride of Wade Irwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Irwin, on Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. F. G. Walker, pastor of the Sparta Baptist church, per formed the double ring cere mony at the church at 5:30 o’clock in the presence of a large gathering of friends and relatives. Preceding the ceremony, Miss Helen Walker rendered a pro gram of nuptial music and Mrs. Gene Irwin, sister-in-law of the bridegroom, sang “I Love You Truly.” Miss Walker was attir ed in a model of brown with which she wore brown acces sories. Her flowers were talis man roses. Mrs. Irwin wore a sleeveless dress of black and a corsage of red roses. Usher-groomsmen, R. D. Gen try, Jr., and James Hardin light ed the candles. Mrs. Cecil Mur ray, sister of the bridegroom, was the bride’s only attendant and was attired in a street dress of black, with which she wore black accessories. A corsage of red roses completed her outfit. The bride entered with her father, by whom she was given in marriage. They were met at the altar by the bridegroom and his best man, Cecil Murray. An improvised altar, with a back ground of pines, and two seven branched candelabra, formed the setting for the impressive cere mony. Tall baskets of white gladioli and white asters stood on either side of the altar. The lovely bride wore a street dress of white wool, trimmed in gold sequins. Her accessories were brown and she wore a shoulder corsage of white rose buds. Immediately following the cere mony, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Irwin entertained at a reception at their home honoring the bridal couple and members of the wed ding party. Mrs. Glenn Wyatt, mother of the bride, attired in black, with a shoulder corsage of red roses, and Mrs. Carl Irwin, mother of the bridegroom, attir ed- in brown, with a shoulder corsage of talisman roses, assist ed Mrs. Gene Irwin in entertain ing. The bride is a member of the senior class of the Sparta high school and will continue her studies there. The bridegroom is on active duty with the U. S. Navy and is stationed in Norfolk. USD A Council To Endorse Projects At a meeting of the Alleghany USDA council last week, a mo tion was made and carried that the group urge the county com missioners to appoint a tax col lector for the county, who would go from house to house and col i leet the taxes. In the present set-up, each individual pays his ' taxes directly to the sheriff. The group also went on record as approving a new site for the Sparta school and pledged coop eration with other civic groups in the project.
