By Robert R. King, Jr. District Health Officer The question has probably oc curred to a number of you as to how the Public Health Program is financed. This matter of course is of primary interest to the per sonnel of the Health Department. Briefly speaking, money for the support of the program comes from private and public sources. Private sources represent such non-profit bodies as the Rocke feller Foundation, The National Foundation for Infantile Paraly sis, and The American Red Cross; such money making organizations as Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, The National Dairy As sociation and similar groups, and from individual foundations such as the Smith Reynolds Founda tion of Winston-Salem, N. C.; public sources represent local, state, and federal funds. Local sources are made up of local do nations and appropriations by the County Commissioners. State funds are appropriated bi-annual ly by the State Legislature at its regular meeting, and federal funds come chiefly from the United States Public Health Serv ice and from divisions of other departments of State. As the present legislature con venes and decides the problems of the state budget it is appro priate to give some details of the contribution of our state to the support of the Public Health Pro gram. The Health Department along with other state-supported programs such as Welfare and Highway Departments is asking for increased appropriations dur ing the next two years. As an example of this there is a re quest for $350,000.00 annually for the control of venereal diseases. Formerly this money has been supplied by the Smith Reynolds Foundation which is now being turned over entirely to Wake Forest College. Unless the state contributes this money we will also lose a similar amount from the Federal Government which is given to match the money avail able in the state. The AUeghany Ashe-Watauga Health Depart ment has been receiving $3,000.00 annually from this source and without this appropriation will stand to lose about half that fig ure each year. The State Board of Health is also asking for an increased appropriation of $250, 000 as compared to $175,000 giv en in previous years to provide more aid by the state as a whole to rural counties. In other sim ilar fields the State Board ol Health has asked for appropria tions by the State Legislature to meet the growing program and increased demands for public Whitehead News Mrs. Reese Caudill and Mrs. Harmon Joines were shopping in Galax, last week. Caudell were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wagoner and Mr. and Mrs. Odell Crouse, Sunday. Mr. Bob Holloway, who has been ill for some time, is some what better. Mr. J. P. Dowell spent Sat urday night with his sister, Mrs. Page Billings. Mt. Zion News Mr. and Mrs. Earl Crouse and two daughters, of Filer, Idaho, visited Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Shep herd and Mr. and Mrs. J. Unless the State Legislature contributes generous ly to the Health Department bud get the service rendered may be hampered in its growth and ef fectiveness.
