Fender, of Sparta com munity, is planning to improve his farm, and was assisted recent ly by the Soil Conservation Serv ice in planning a conservation program on his entire place. He is planning to seed about 2 acres to ladino clover and orchard grass this spring. C. P. Carico. of the Edmonds •community, plans to seed some new pasture this spring on fields ■which are producing very poor grazing. He has already limed these fields and plans to apply «00 pounds of a high grade fer tilizer mixture when the seeds lare planted. Julian Hyde, a student at Gladef "Valley school, represented Alle ghany county in the SoH Con servation public speaking con test, held in North Wilkesboro last Thursday. Julian won 4th -prize of $10.00. We are proud 8pf this showing, and the interest shown in the county. L. S. Tayson, who lives near Sparta, plans to set a badly erod ed area in his pasture field to White pines. The Soil Conserva tion Service is working with Tay son in planning other conserva tion practices on his farm. Joe Shoate, of the Pine Swamp (Community, has asked the Soil Conservation Service to assist him nn getting soil samples on some <of his fields. Joe feels that a 'better knowledge of the need of Ihis fields can be had through soil analysis. He was tie son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. 'Williams, of Peden. He spent almost two years in tthe U. S. Army, one year of which ■was spent overseas in Japan. He tad just "been home two months. Dean, as we knew him, was always a good boy, ouiet and never talked much. Was kind and considerate of his parents. To know him was to be his friend. He was a peculiar boy, in as much as be never was known to speak short or unkind to either «of his parents, nor to use any Tcftid 'of unbecoming language.
