ments, the House yesterday pass
ed on second and third readings
the biennial appropriations bill
calling for the spending during
the next two years of approx
imately $311,000,000, the largest
spending bill in the State’s his
tory.
The House also passed the bien
nial revenue measure on second
reading again after removing
from the measure an amendment
by Representative Odus Mull of
Cleveland which would have dri
ed up beer and wine sales in
Cleveland.
Mull consented to removal of
the amendment after telling the
House that a compromise had
been adopted under which a
House Finance Subcommittee
would report favorably. a bill
under which wine sales would
be banned in Cleveland and the

county would be authorized to
prohibit sale of beer except in
hotels and class-A restaurants.

The children of the fourth and
fifth grades of Sparta elementary
schools are now selling garden
and flower seeds.
Their class rooms will be given
one-third of the proceeds collect
ed which will be used for im
provements of the classrooms, it
was pointed out.

The other part of the .bonus
will be paid In the eighth and
ninth months. The bonus the in
dividual teachers will receive this
month runs from $96.00 to $132.00,
it was explained.
Many public officials as well
as private citizens have express
ed themselves as long being in
favor to the raise in salary for
teachers and are happy to see
them receive part of it.
School bus drivers, county
mechanics and janitors will also
come in for their proportionate
part of the bonus.
Other state employees in the
county benefitted by the bonus
included members of the high
way forces, State highway patrol
men and agricultural workers
that are paid by the state.

announced this week for the po
lio drive fund recently held in
the county. Those contributing

making plans for spring practice,
it was stated this week.
Twenty-two uniforms have
been received this week, it was
learned.
Immediately following the
meeting Clif Evans and his band
will play for a square dance. All
players and fans are cordially
invited to be present. Elgin Ed
wards is manager of the Sparta
Baseball Club.
The club had a most successful
season last year and as far as it
is known most of the same players
will be in uniform again.

The Sparta Cleaners and laun
dry service will have its formal
opening at the new location next
door to the post office here on
Monday, it was announced this
week.
The new establishment, owned
by Paul Joines, Dave Higgins
and Ralph Cheek, will feature
the latest thing in dry cleaning,
the new synthetic Sah-I-System.
The new system washes, deodor
izes and dries clothes in approx
imately 30 minutes, it was stated.

will be held tomorrow at two
o’clock at the high school. Those
participating are Pauline Wyatt,
who will speak on “The Consti
tution, Temple of Liberty,” and
Alda Richardson, who will speak
on ’History of the Constitution.”
The legion post will present
the first place winner with a cash
award of $15 and the second place
winner with a cash award of $10.

Mrs. Joines, -60, died Thursday
morning after several years of
failing health and serious illness
for the past month at her home
at Whitehead.
She is suryived by her hus
band, two daughters, Mrs. Dimp-.
sey Irwin, of Beckley, W. Va.;
Mrs. Car) Joines. of Sparta; two
sons, William Joines, of White
head, and Lee Joines, of Sparta.
Also two sisters, Mrs. Kenny
Waddell and Mrs. Jeff Edwards,
of Whitehead, and three broth
ers, Fielden Caudill, of Sparta,
Lee and Joshua Caudill, of
Whitehead, survive. Twenty
grandchildren also survive.
Thompsons Visit Here After
