Record Crowd Sees Parade;

What is believed to be a record
crowd tor Alleghany county and
Sparta, filled the horse show
grounds Saturday evening for the
final performance of the show,
when championship trophies were
awarded and Mrs. Paul Reeves
was the winner of the Ford car
given away -by the Sparta Lion’s
club.
- Saturday evening’s show cli
maxed the events which opened
on Friday evening, under the
sponsorship of the Lion's club.
The three-event show which in
cluded many widely known hor
ses, was declared by many to
have been the most successful
and widely attended event of its
kind in this section of the State
this year. A conservative estimate
of the attendance for this final
show was 3,000.
A highlight of the event was
the parade just before the Sat
urday afternoon performance.
Spectators lined the street from
the school house to the show
grounds. A crowd of its kind had
not been seen in Sparta hi a'liunj
ber of years one citizen pointed
out The parade was lead by the
Veterans of Foreign Wars- fol
lowed by the members of the
American Legion. In the rear of
the parade were sopie of the

Next Thursday

Points Are Announced

A cooperative shipment of
lambs will be made from North
Wilkesboro on Thursday, July
31, R. E. Black, county agent,
stated yesterday, and a schedule
for trucks hauling the lambs to
the market has been worked out.
Any farmer desiring to haul
his own lambs may do so Mr.
Black stated and pointed out that
scales would be available all
day Thursday at the market
Farmers who have lambs ready
for shipment and who are unable
to make arrangements to meet
the schedule should contact the
county agent’s office at once in
order that other provisions can
be made.
The time and the name of the
stopping points have been worked
out in the following schedule:

{sale conducted at the State Test
Farm, last Friday.
The t«p ranking animal for Al
leghany county was purchased
; by Charlton Hutton, of Glade
Valley, for $305. The animal was
Mauncey’s Ace Charmer, consign
ed by Y. C. Collins, of Salisbury.
The second high animal was Nor
eva Foremost, consigned by Y. C.
Collins, of Salisbury, and pur
chased by R. C. Hauser, of Spar
ta. for $265. (
Others purchasing were Robert
F. Myers, of Laurel Springs, who
bought Arden Bluebell, consigned
by T. Holt Haywood, of Clem
mons, for $200. J. H. Miller, of
Laurel Springs, bought Supreme’s
Maxim, consigned by Riley B.
Sloan, of Hiddenite, for $200. Mr.
Miller also purchased Clemen
tine Rose of B. P. for $165. The

Alleghany Farmers May Place
Orders Now Through
AAA Office
Herbert Osborne, chairman of
the county AAA committee an
nounced yesterday that his of
fice had received instructions
from Raleigh to again issue pur
chase orders for lime, phosphate
and other AAA materials and ser
vices. This was all stopped some
weeks ago when the House slash
ed the Agricultural funds.
While no details have been
received here as yet concerning
the county’s allotment of funds,
all farmers that haVe not al
ready used theirs In grass seed
or some other service are given
the go-ahead Signal to apply for
their orders for phosphate and
make payment on lime.
In a telegram from the State
AAA office at Raleigh the local
office received the following in
structions: “You are authorized
to immediately resume ordering
contract lime and issuing pur
chase orders for other materials
and service."
The message also stated that
while the House reduced the
Senate appropriation bill, the
carry over frag* last year will
bring the program back&g got
too nrf- below that of last year.'

Mayor G. Glenn Nichols issued
an appeal to the citizens of Sparta
to use as little water as possible
since the town water supply is
now critically low. Garages are
asked not to use water for car
washing and beauty parlors are
asked to use as little water as
possible. . '
Every effort is being made to
remedy the situation Mr. Nichols
pointed out and stated that as
soon as the well site Was decided
upon that R. E. Faw and Sons,
well drilling concern of Hickory,
Will begin work on the new well.

perience With well drilling for
! the past 36 years. It now operates
, eight modern machines and has
1 engaged in well drilling in Tenn
1 essee, Virginia and Georgia as
I well as North Carolina.

Fifty-three Alleghany farmers
representing every community in
the county met at the community
building, here, Monday night in
the interest of establishing a
county unit of the Farm Bureau.
Flack Shaw, executive vice-presi
dent of the bureau, and Clyde R.
Greene, president of the Watau
ga county unit, were present and
explained the purpose of the bu
reau to the group. Also present
for the meeting was George Far
thing, field representative of the
bureau^
During the meeting, plans for
irganizing and electing officers
vere discussed and Rush Thomp
son was named temporary chair
nan until the group can be organ
zed. Roy Ellison was named
emporary secretary. Permanent
fficers will be named at a meet

A group of citizens of Alloc
ghany met at Cool Springs Tour- j
ist court last Thursday night for
the purpose of organizing an Al-j
leghany chapter of the Founda
tion for Control of Infantile Para
lysis. Here for the organization
was Phillip S. Randolph, State
representative of the foundation,
accompanied by Mack Sumner,
representative of the foundation,

R. E. Black was named chair
man of the executive committee
for the county chapter and named
to serve with him were Mrs. T.
S. Moxley, vice-chairman and Al
ton Thompson, secretary and
treasurer. Other members of the
committee were Mrs. Worth
Smith, Miss Pearl Fields, Mrs. j
D. J. Jones and Fred Collins.
Mr. Black pointed out that al-,
though no epidemic of infantile
paralysis was at hand, that at
any time a case should break out,
it should be reported immediately
to one of the members of the ex
ecutive committee and the vic
tim would be hospitalized im
mediately.

that Porter Lumber company had
given generously of time, build
ing materials and labor. Duke
Bledsoe has also given 1000 feet
of subflooring. Mrs. Cleo Mc
Millan donated $50 in memory
of William R. Anderson. P. C.
Collins, Jr., has aided the build
ing by hauling and giving the
sand.
Mr. Murray stated that the local
post now has a total, of 97 mem
bers, 23 of which only recently

of ABC stores. Mecklenburg, on
June 14, approved them by a ma
jority of 3,547 votes, thereby for
