There were approximately 340, 716,000 layers on hand on United States farms during May. Supples of chicken meat in the second half of 1947 will be below last year. S. Parker, of Parker, all records for the month of August So far, have beep broken for this! section with a rainfall of 8.5 in ches and without a clear day, for the month. Many of the crops are showing a nominal growth, due to lack of adequate sunshine and high soil moisture, Mr. Parker reports. He alsd points out that much of the tobacco headed too low and is now “yellowing too easily for maximum production. MEET TO BE HELD AT BELVIEW CHURCH A special meeting will be held at Belview Baptist church on Saturday night, August 30, at 8 o’clock, it was announced here by Rev. Lee Woodruff. Rev. Mr. Woodruff urges that all jnembers be present for the meeting. NEED GEOMETRY AND PHYSICS BOOKS R. H. Walker, principal of Sparta high school, has asked that all students' who have geometry and physics books that they would like to sell, to bring them to school. There is a scarcity of these books and students are urged to sell their old text books. FIFTY BOYS NOW PRACTICING FOOTBALL Fifty boys, eager to begin work on the gridiron reported to Coach Joe Bill Reed on Monday and practice is now underlay. The boys will meet each after noon at 1:30 o’clock on the local field for practice. BASEBALL TEAM IS DEFEATED 3 TIMES Three defeats were suffered by the Sparta baseball team in last weeks’ games. The team journey ed to Boone last Wednesday to suffer a 15-6 loss and was de feated by Elk Creek 5-4. Bridle Creek handed the local team a 6-3 defeat._ New Hope News Mr. and Mrs. Paul Swanson had as their week end guests Miss Irene Bovender, Jackie Holcomb, O. H. Walker and Earl Trivette, of Winston-Salem. Miss Edna Jones and Miss Ha zel Jones are the captains of the reds and blues contest which is being conducted at the New Hope Baptist church. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Swanson en tertained the Union St. Baptist choir, of Winston-Salem with a oicnig. at their home, Saturday. The forty members conducted a song service at the New Hope Baptist church.
