Turkish Tobacco Production Is To Be Expanded In This Area It is a far call from Turkey to Alleghany and Ashe counties, but experiments in the production of this aromatic leaf have been so successful during the past three years, that the program is expected to be greatly expanded next year. The above pictures show how it is handled: At the upper left may be seen people gathering the leaf. The next is shown in the upper right hand corner. In the lower left is a model barn with a drying rack. The q{ storing after being cured is shown in the lower r ight picture. Fanners are raising 34,667,000 turkeys this year, 16 percent less than last year according to the preliminary estimate of the Bu WWW! reau of Agricultural Economics. This is the smallest crop since 1943, but 5 per cent above the 1939-43 average. The Everyday Counselor * Rev. Herbert Spaugh, D. D. Everyone makes mistakes. That’s why pencils have erasers on one end. He who makes no mistakes does nothing, but he who makes too many loses his job. A letter from a discouraged correspondent is on my desk. This young man has had a hard time, but so have other people had hard tunes. He made some mistakes, loSt his job. He is try ing a new one and is discouraged. “I am sick of living and don’t see how I can keep the job I now have much longer. The time for a man to learn a trade is not when his nerves have gone as mine have, and when he is up in years and spirit-broken as I am.^The time for a man to learn how to overcome an inferiority complex is not when he is as old as I am.” All 'this from a young man who is under 30 years of age. He has made mistakes, but who doesn’t. The thing to do is to get up.-and try it again. There is a lot of value in those old mottoes placed at the top of Copy Books of yesterday in which we prac ticed penmanship, one comes to mind: “If at first you don’t SPARTA PIPES, INC. Caudill, of the Sparta community, was assisted last week by personnel of *.e Soil Conservation Service in sampling some of his fields. He also, ap lied some nitrate of Soda on -e pasture field and found that it over doubled the grazing. J. H. Doughton had his fields sampled in 1945 and treated them according, to their needs. Last week he had them sampled again to see how these fields are com ing along and if more treatment is needed. J. M. Truitt, of Vox, seeded la dino clover in oats in 1946 This year he mowed it twice for hay, receiving good yields of high quality hay. He plans now to graze his ladino, being careful not to graze it too closely. Hugh Halsey, of the Piney Creek community, who is doing a good job of dairying sees the need of quality hay in his dairy ing enterprise, so he seeded about 5 or 6 acres of his best crop land to ladino clover this spring. Hugh is well pleased with his clover so far. Walter Spurlin, of near Hooker, was assisted this spring by the Soil Conservation Service in get ting his main crop fields in a strip rotation. Walter is well pleased with these strips since they have saved his field from loosing top soil this summer. A good 'dairy cow requires a large quantity of water, and the milking cow needs considerable more than the dry cow. succeed, try, try again." It is surprising what one can do when he really makes up his mind to try; puts his mind, heart and every effort upon the new undertaking. I went into the ministry at about the age of this correspon dent It was new work, entirely different Prior to this time, I had been in the manufacturing business. I was working on ma chines, books, not people. A man can learn a new trade evep when he is 40. I recall once teaching a 40-year-old machinist to play the piano. Someone sold him a piano as he loved music, but he hadn’t realized that a piano must be played.* Then, with his money invested in it, the only way he could get it out was by playing it. He took lessons with grim de termination, practiced regularly, learned to play to his own satis faction. Anyone who has reasonable strength and ability can get a job today, but not by sitting down and pitying himself. This correspondent needs to get down on his knees and ask the Lord’s forgiveness for this self-pity, ask for guidance and then get up and go out and hunt a job, or else make up his mind to like the one he has.
