The* grocery store, owned, and
operated by Arthur Murphy, at
Little Pine, was entered by
theives some time Tuesday night
and approximately $500 in cash
•was stolen. Also stolen were sev
eral cartons of cigarettes, canned
goods and ammnunition.
The theft was discovered by
the owner early Wednesday
morning when he opened his
store for the day. The basement
window had been prized open and
entrance to the building had
been gained through it. Investi
gating officers reported that the;
-man who entered the
window, must have been small
in stature as the hole in. the win
dow only measured 12 x 18 inches.
As yet no arrests have been
made in the case, officers stated.
Flash Flood At
Galax Saturday
Chestnut Creek Rushes
Through Town Doing
Tremendous Damage
I Galax, Va. — A flash flood that
tore down Chestnut Creek early
Saturday morning sent more
than 150 families scurrying from
• their homes, left livestock wan
dering unmolested around the
town’s few dry spots, and caused
damage estimated from $250,000
to $3,000,000.
No casualties were reported.
A cloudburst drenched the
creek’s headwaters Friday after
noon, and the creek began to
leave its banks about 5:30 p. m.
Shortly after midnight the town
was flooded.
By yesterday afternoon, the

the ninth district are expected
to be well represented in States

courthouse Saturday afternoon
at one o’clock.
W. D. Kizziah, District Execu
tive Committee Chairman, of
Salisbury, announced that at this
time the Robert L. Doughton
Victory Banner would be award
ed to Iredell county.
The banner is awarded each
year to the county in the Ninth
Dictrict which gives Representa
tive Doughton the largest ma
jority. Cabarrus County won the
banner in the last election.
Congressman Doughton, will
be among tae speakers for the
Rally.
Gubernatorial candidates Char
les Johnson, Mayne Albright, and
Oscar Barker have been invited,
as have Senator William B. Um
stead and J. Melville Broughton,
candidates for the Senate, and
Senator Clyde Hoey.
Governor Gregg Cherry has
been invited, but Mr. Kizziah
said he had not learned whether
or not the Governor will attend.

To Attend Show
Labor Saving Show To Be
Held In independence
Va., On October 27
R. Emerson Black, county
agent, announced that the Labor
Saving show, sponsored by the
Extension service and the Emer
gency Farm Labor Committee
will be held at Independence, Va.,
on Monday, October 27.
The show will begin at 10:00 a.
m. and close at 4:00 p. m. This
is an excellent show, consisting
of over 100 ideas for reducing
labor cost on the farm and in
the home, it was stated. 4H items
are simple enough to be con
structed by the average farmer
and detailed plans will be fur
nished to those requesting them.

Sparta Wins Over Scottville;
To Have Banquet, Dance, Sat.
Although the official playing
season for the Virginia league is
over, the Sparta baseball club
continues to meet county and
visiting teams, here. Last Sun
day, Sparta defeated the Scott
ville team- by a score of 15-2. On
the mound for Sparta was Frank
Atwood and Dale Holloway was
catching.
Plans are now to meet the West
Jefferson team at West Jefferson
Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock.
In celebration of the victory
won by the local ball club, a
banquet is being given for the
players and their wives and
specially invited gueets at the
Sparta high school lunchroom

Joines Back In
Naval Reserve
Carlyle Edison Joines, who ser
ved as signalman, third class,
during World War II, enlisted
in the civil ism reserve of the U.
S. N. R. here Tuesday and is
now on inactive duty.
During activities in the war,
Joines was awarded the Ameri
can area ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific
ribbon with three stars, the
Philippine liberation ribbon and
the World War II victory ribbon.

Panel Truck Wrecks As It
Leaves Highway 1 Mile
West Of Scenic
Three persons were injured in
an accident one mile west of the
Scenic on U. S. Highway No. 18,
Monday night around seven
o’clock when the truck in which
they were riding left the road,
and overturned on a five foot
embankment. The 1936 Ford pan
el truck, driven by Roger G.
Swaim, 29, of Jonesville, left the
highway as the driver tried to
make the curve.
Swaim, accompanied by John
B. Eldridge, 27, of Elkin, and
Doris Hutchinson, 17, of North
Wilkesboro suffered deep lac
cerations about the head, as* did
the other two occupants of the
truck. All three injured parties
were taken to the Ashe Memorial
hospital at Jefferson for treat
ment. They were released from
the hospital, Tuesday and al
though the cuts were reported to
be deep wounds, they were not
too severe.
The accident was investigated
by Patrolman W. H. Hogan, and
C. Bryant Taylor, chief of police.
Damage to the truck was esti
mated at around $250.

Alleghany county F. F. A. boys
were represented at the field
day exercises held at Boone on
Monday when boys from various
counties were present.
Alleghany boys participated in
the 100 and 50 yard dash, high
and broad jumps and the base
ball distance throwing and horse
show contests.
Health Educator
Here On Tuesday
Miss Margaret McCain, of High
Point, has been named as public
health educator for Alleghany,
Ashe and Watauga counties, it
was learned this week.
Miss McCain will have her of
fice at ASTC at Boone and will
work in the three counties. She
was here in Sparta, Tuesday.
