Our aid to bombed out civilians strengthens their morale for the tasks that lie ahead. Valdese peo ple consider it a privilege to have a part in this worthy cause. In announcing a continuation of the work in the new year, the chairman of the local branch, Mrs. Alexis Guigou, says: “As we contributors. of this communtiy can be quite proud of ourselves, but we should not be satisfied. In our plans-for 1942 (all of us do make New Year resolution) let us plan to do even more. “With the country now actively in the war we shall have to give and give, not only cf goods and money but also of our sons, brothers and loved ones". _ CHURCH LOYALTY The Church Loyalty campaign which the Presbyterian and Methodist churches of the town are launching is a challenge to every church member. In the present state of emergency a thoughtful people will do well to heed the call of their religious leaders and pledge anew their faith in the power of the living Cli’ist whose birthday we are soon to celebrate. As has been pointed out the Christian church has had a vital part in “fostering the very life-blood of democracy.” The Christian people of Valdese will respond. They will rally round the Cliristian flag and as they do so they will sing with a new zeal “Faith of our fathers! holy faith! We will be true to thee till death!” TRAPSES ' NTED ORK for SO trainees o -.Ives for defense r more n hour was mm ■ • ", ek by the Mor gan leu o: . r of the North Caro lina Stair Employment Service. Mrs. Mary Lou Gulley, county director for the adult education program, said much interest was shown in the free course offered to all adults of the area in classes held twice weekly. Adult education teachers con ducted the folowing classes: Mrs. Ruth Spinks, first aid, with en rollment of 20; Mrs. Kathleen Bishop, cooking as a phase of homemaking, with an enrollment of 32, the largest of the course; Mrs. Lou London Marsteller, home hygiene, enrollment of nine; Mrs. Nora Noblett, elementary work with five enrolled; and Mrs. Gulley, music, with 16 enrolled. Attendance averaged 55 for each of the two-hour sessions held twice weekly. Mrs. Gulley said the adult ed ucation teachers are especially grateful for the splendid co-op eration of Principal Kenneth J. Hoyle and teachers of the Drexel school, some of whom volunteered to assist in teaching classes. The “Community Night School'’ is similar to that recently held in the Salem section, and the adult education teachers hope to hold such a course twice a year—one in the Spring and another in the Fall—at various points in the county, the director said. We are grateful of this op portunity to extend to all, our best wishes for a joy ous Christmas. The still, which apparently had been in operation earlier in the day, occupied the location of a similar outfit around which sev eral young moonshiners stood be fore Vester Lackey blasted Wil liam Mitchell to his death with a shotgun, it was learned from Sheriff Paul M. Dale. Sheriff Dale said some 600 gal lons of beer had been distilled and part of it “mashed ip” again before officers arrived. In another raid, officers for the second time thwarted a moon shining attempt near the St. Paul road, just below Lake James in Linville township. With the still itself not on hand, raiders found and destroyed 1,000 gallons of beer. Recently officers prevented a “run” at the same spot by de stroying the mash. Earlier in the week, Chief Deputy Sheriff W. C. Hoyle de stroyed a steam distillery, still warm from a run, in Icard town ship, and poured out, 300 gallons of beer. The outfit was located in what is known as the Hilde brand mill section. Intensive raiding has revealed little, if any, increased activity among moonshiners for the Christmas season, officers said.
