Here ’n There At The Community Center 4 By JIMMIE CHAMBERS By JIMMIE CHAMBERS The rains finally ceased last week and then came the hot weather—so hot that the swim ming pool is being used to the limit. What a thrill it is to watch the young folks as they hit that springboard and dive into the water. Many of them are becoming expert swimmers. The swimming classes are do ing just fine with many of the little folks learning the art of keeping on top of the water. Swimming lessons will continue for the month of August. May we say a word for base ball lovers—our Juniors are go ing places. No, they are not win ning all of their games but many of them are learning to hit the old apple and some day we will have a real ball team. Last week they lost to the Highland Cubs at Hickory on Thursday, and on Fri day they got off to a bad start and Icard had them 9 to nothing before they really got going. They lost in that game 11 to 9. They came back on Saturday when they went to Hickory and defeated the strong Hickory Juniors on their home lot 8 to 6. “Pooch” Pons was on the mound in that- game and he pitched fourteen innings before the game was over. Little Rhoney, our shortstop, was the man with the stick in that game as he got three for five. All of our kids have been playing good ball and they deserve any support that you can give them. PLAYGROUND: Have you ever stopped to think that if a child is taught to play right he will more than likely have no trouble in making a good per son in life. The child who is not taught to play soon finds himself CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our deepest heartfelt appreciation for the many deeds of kindness and ex pressions of love and sympathy extended to us at the time of the homegoing of our loved one. We are extremely grateful for all the beautiful floral tributes. Mrs. M. I. Harris and Family. CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank our friends and relaties for their kindness following the death of our son and brother, James Rhoben Deal. Also for the beautiful floral offerings. Last week’s ticket was for Myce Epley. in a very bad place because he doesn't know how to play with other children. Little hands are there, but they won’t amount to much in life unless they are guid ed through childhood, and when I say guided I don’t mean they should be just half guided. Send your children to the playgi*ound program every morning—they will get good training and they will enjoy every minute of it. Pee Wee needs a stroller Pee Wee, who was so named by the nurses at the Valdese -General Hospital, is a blue baby who has lived in the hospital all the 16 months since he was born, and who must stay there until he is old enough to have an operation on the valves of his heart. _If he had a stroller, he could go for walks (or rides, rather) in the sunshine. He can’t stand up, and he’s getting too big to be carried very far. So, if anyone has a stroller that is not in use, a call to the hospital saying that it is avail able would make Pee Wee very happy. ’ ‘ ' Burke County Briefs DONATE LOT The Rev. and Mrs. John D.
