Fran cis Verreault of Valdese, became the bride of Thomas Irvin White, son of Mrs. C. R. Claywell of Mor ganton, in a ceremony of charming simplicity Saturday afternoon, Au gust 20, at four o’clock in the Wal densian Presbyterian church. Rev. A. B. McClure, pastor of the church, officiated in the single ring ceremony, in which the bride received the ring that had belong ed to her husband’s great-great grandmother. # Before the ceremony Mrs. Parks Sherrill, Jr., organist, played Ro mance from “Les Preludes” by Liszt, ‘‘Evening Star” by Wagner,' “Poem” by Fibich, and ‘‘O Pe, ’•»ot Love" by Barnby. ‘‘Pomp and Cir cumstance” by Elgar was used for the recessional and the “Fest March” from “Tannhauser” by Wagner was used for the reces sional. “To a Wild Rose” by Mc Dowell was played softly during the ceremony. The bride was given in marriage by her father. For her wedding, she had chosen a navy afternoon dress with a white hat and white accessories. Her corsage was a white purple-throgted orchid. Miss Louise Ann Vereault served as her sister’s maid of honor. She wore a street dress of taupe luster satin with a matching bandeau hat and a corsage of yellow roses. James Alexander Shuping of Morganton was best man. Mrs. Verreault, mother of the bride, wore a gray street dress with gray accessories and a gardenia corsage. Mrs. Jane Page, better known as “Grandma Page,” is ill at the Valdese General Hospital, where she has been receiving treatment since Saturday. Mrs. Ben Pons, Doris and Ben nie Pons, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Ramsey, Jr., and son, Mack, and Miss Jeanne Garrou, spent last week at Ocean Drive, S. C., where they had a cottage. Miss Bernice Ribet had as her guest for the weekend Miss Frankie Fincher of Kannapolis. The girls will be roommates this year at Mitchell College. Miss Evelyn Bounous, Miss Lu cile Williams and Mrs. George Squillario spent the weekend at Myrtle Beach. Douglas Squillario spent the weekend in Asheville with his aunt, Mrs. Arthur Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Corbett and family spent the weekend with Mr. Corbett’s family in Ad kinson, N. C., near Wilmington. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey King of Georgiana, Ala., have returned home after a two-week visit with Mr. and Mrs. Lee Rityet. Following the reception, the couple left for a wedding trip to Princeton, West Virginia, and Long Beach, N. C. For traveling the bride wore a beige suit with a white hat and brown accessories and her orchid corsage. The couple will reside in Chapel Hill this win ter. Pre-Nuptial Events Fete Muriel Burns Miss Muriel Burns, of Kanna polis, formerly of Valdese, whose marriage to James Thomas Mar tin will take place Friday, August 26, at the First Baptist church in Kannapolis, has been honored at a number of pre-nuptial events in Kannapolis. In June, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Marlin entertained at their home in Kannapolis at a tea honoring six brides-elect of the season, Miss Burns being one of the six. On Tuesday, July 19, the 17 and 18-year old girls Sunday School class of the First Baptist church in Kannapolis gave a surprise mis cellaneous shower in honor of Miss Burns, who is the teacher of the class. The event was held at the home of Misses Imogene and Kath leen Brown. The choir of the First Baptist church presented to Miss Burns and her finance a piece of silver in their chosen pattern at a choir party in the spring. Both Miss Burns and Mr. Martin are mem bers of the choir. Miss Street Entertains Miss Muriel Burns, bride-elect of August 26, was complimented by Miss Virginia Street at her home on Massel street in Valdese at a household shower, Saturday afternoon at five o’clock. The hon oree received gifts of china, silver and linens. Mrs. Adam Street, mother of the hostess, was assisted by Mrs. Clyde Berry in serving sandwiches, an iced drink, and cookies. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Green had as their dinner guests Saturday eve ning Miss Blanche Coffey and Stanley Levey of Lenoir. Mr. and Mrs. Revis Lowman of Evansville, Ind., have been spend ing a two-week vacation with Mr. Lowman’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Lowman, and other rela tives in this area. Mr. Lowman is a geologist with an oil company in Evansville. BUY U. S. Saving Bonds Mother-Daughter Event Is Planned By Eastern Star Mother-daughter evening wiJl be held Friday night at 8 o’clock by the Lovelady Chapter No. 147, O. E. S., with the ceremony of initiation. Mothers and daughters of East ern Star members^who are not themselves members of the East ern Star, are invited to the social hour which follows the initiation ceremony. The social hour will begin about 9 a. m. Special invitations ^ave been extended to the Eastern Star chapters of surrounding towns, including Hickory, Lenoir, Mor ganton, Spindale, and Old Fort. Mrs. Doris Ward of Morganton will be the soloist of the evening. A color scheme of red and blue will be carried out so far as pos sible in both decorations of the hall and in dress. Dutch Club Names Hosts For Friday The Valdese Dutch Club will hold its bi-monthly meeting Fri day night, August 26, at 8 o’clock at the American Legion Hut on Bienvenue Road. GRISETTE ENTERTAINS CLASS The Win-Some class of the First Baptist church held its monthly class meeting Thursday evening at the home of the teacher, Mrs. Ulysses Grisette, on St. Germain street. During the devotional period, Mrs. Edward Triplett had the scripture-reading, and Mrs. Lee Laws read a poem, “The End of a Perfect Day”. After the business period, a so cial hour was served. A gift and a corsage of red roses were pre sented to Mrs. Claude Triplett, whose birthday came within the month of August. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostess. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Claude Triplett. BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR DAVID DEAL David Deal celebrated his eighth birthday Tuesday afternoon at a party given by his mother, Mrs. John Deal. MRS. FRANK H. PONS IS BRIDGE HOSTESS The Sans Souci Bridge Club was entertained at its bi-weekly meeting Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Frank H. Pons on Bouchard street. Two tables of bridge in play. Prizes were award ed to Mrs. Jack Burns for high score, and to Miss Patsy Melvin for second high. Mrs. John C. Pons received the traveling prize. A sweet course was served by the hostess. MT. CALVARY TRAINING UNION PLANS PICNIC The Training Union of the Mt. Calvary Baptist church will have a picnic Saturday afternoon at the Mimosa Fishing Club. All who are planning to go will meet at the church at 2 p. m., and trans portation will be provided. In case of rain, the picnic will be held at the church. VALDESE FIREMEN ATTEND CAROLINA BEACH MEET Fire Chief Lee Ribet and Fire man Francis Garrou of Valdese attended the state firemen’s con vention at Carolina Beach last week. Mayor A. A. Pons also at tended the meeting. Accompanying them to the beach were Mrs. Lee Ribet and daughter, Julia, Miss Elizabeth Ramsey, Mrs. A. W. Baker and daughter, Catherine, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey King, of Georgiana, Ala., who were visiting the Ribets, and Mrs. A. A. Pons and daughters, Gwendolyn and Jeanette. Becomes Bride Of Aaron Pierson Miss Mary Elizabeth Crowe of Valdese became the bride of Aaron Lee Pierson of Connelly Springs Saturday afternoon, August 13, at 2:30 o’clock in Gaffney, S. C. Judge Roy C. Cobb officiated at the single ring ceremony. The bride wore a white eyelet suit with navy and white acces sories and a corsage of red roses. Mrs. Pierson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Crowe of Valdese, was graduated from the Valdese high school in the class of 1949, and is now employed by the Little Man’s Grocery. The bridegroom, whose guard ians are Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sharpe of Connelly Springs, attended the Hildebran schools and served for 18 months in the U. S. Navy. He is now employed by the Drexel Furniture Company. EXAM FOR SUBSTITUTE VALDESE POSTAL CLERK Announcement has been made by J. Francis Tron, Jr., of the Valdese Post Office, that a civil service examination for a sub stitute postal clerk for the Val dese office will be held in the near future. Mr. Tron may be contacted for further information about the examination.
