FRIDAY. APRIL 12. IBI2.
TO THK fOTTON ROW Kits
OF THK SOUTH
1 feel it prope^-and advisable in
me as the one who should be best
informed as to probable results to be ,
expected under the "Rock HUl Plan"'
movement for reduction of cotton
acreage, to sdund a final warning to i
everyone who bai\ signed tho "Rock
Hill Plan" pledge to adhere strictly
to It not only as a matter of personal i
I honor, but for the sake of his own
aired gam and protection.
With equal empb&als I would urge ,
all, in their own lntereet, who hare
not been reached by Roclc Hill plan
canvassers, or who hare declined to
*ign the pledge, to cut the acreage
and cut it deep. My opinion of the |
judgment of the man who will In*
crease his acreage thia year la not
flattering. H
Planting time Is about on throughout
the belt, and the Rock Hill plan
is being closed up in several states |
with an unusually late spring prevailing
generally over the belt. The
movement of fertilizer has gotten a
tardy start, but has put on a mighty
gait recently.
Those who look to a late spring
the noiso of fertilizer red notion, or
to the other fellow doing the reduc- ,
ing?to any combination of these?
toiprotect them against low prices?
are apt to beAhe ones to suffer.
The only safe course In the present
crisis is to cut the acreage and 1
cut it deep. The aprlng of 1?97 _is
said to be the latest on record. The
, number of acres planted that year exceded
1896 by 1.046. 176, and the '
number of balea produced exceeded
1896. by 2.400.000 with the rfault 1
that prices were low daring the fall
of 1897. If we are to take 1897 as
iin example, it will not do to depend- j
on bad weather doing the work.
We have a four million bale sur- 1
plus hanging over our heads. Important
foreign spinners who
bought at last fall's low prices thia 1
fall. Mill labor unrest and worldwide
coal trouble* further militate
against. To play the game properly
ve should, not make more than
19.000,000 balea this year. The eourage
of those who flirt with this cop- !
ditlon Is wonderful, but their judgment
would not do to desrcrlba tor .
publication. .- .
Let the cry be, "cut the acreage .
and cut.it deep." Corn can be planted
as late as July 1st. and the farm\
er will be a great deal better off. If ^
\ he ralsee ,les? cotton and more corn.
for In the end he will get as much
for a small crop as he would |f he .
ment would not do to describe for .
will hare his corn clear.
