SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, 1912 TRUE PUBLIC SERVANTS Beaufort County has a board of Br Education which has not only protect I ed the public school funds but they have been progressive in the true Bense of the word. A few years they made an offer to duplicate any amount of money raised by a community for the erection of a new Bchool building. A large portion of the county has taken advantage of thiB offer and new | E-. buildings are to be seen in almost! every community, while the board has encouraged this work and lengthened the school term. Where practical they have always first ascert tained if they had funds available for, R the work proposed and when funds run low they cut appropriations aq^ have thereby lived within their income. The policy of naming the members | of the Board for 2. 4 and 6 years is a good one aa it always leaves two members of the board who are fai miliar with the school finances and] work, this policy would be a good onej in naming of County Commissioners,! theu we would never be placed in' > the position of having an entire new | board composed of men who have had no experience in the handling of the county affairs. Public officials who perform their duty as have the Board of Education should receive the commendation of the citizens. The County Superintendent has * been no small factor in the establishment of special tax districts and creating the enthusiasm in the public schoots which is necessary for their permanent growth, success aud usefulness. he lias labored for an increase In the length of the school term for the rural districts and his r labors are not in vain. j Beaufort County is to be congratulated upon having such men as E. W. Ayers, W. M. Butt and T. R. Hodges j members of its Board of Education and W. L. Vaughan as County Superintendent. WHERE WAS THE (iOVKKXOH j The weekly paper discusses at some length this week the speech of Mr. Joslah William Bailey recently! delivered in the Court House, this city, advocating the return of Senator F. M. Simmons to the United j j; States senate from North Carolina. | We have read the story with care ' and must admit we have been unable f. to discover a.single expression or in[ timation to prove the senior Senator's uuworthinoss or seeming derelictness in duty since the people of the statej entrusted him with the high commis I 8-. sion which he has so ably and acceptE j ably filled for the past decade. The fact of the business is. the editor of the weekly was not present when Mr. \ Bailey spoke and inasmuch as he anP sou need in his last week's issue, that K Owing to his absence he would disK cuss the Bailey speech this week. By would Indicate between the lines, | ? that his man "Friday"' Is again in I fc; tho lime light and edits his sheet when necessary. Judging from the Hl weekly Simmons is the Ingrate of I B' North Carolina politics while Gover nor Kltchin. who the editor of the K- Progress and his man "Friday" ad^B-' rocato. needs only wings to admit ^K'ltim into the celestial environments. 5' As to what Senator Simmons has I done for North Carolina stands out Hi'ln- bold relief? It needs no defense K or comment from the Dally News (so K' does Governor Kitohin's record for I B accomplishments). He (Simmons) R Secured momf/ for his people and did ?tt while attending to his duties as r ? servant of the people at the capi1 til of the nation and it is notorious H lie was not running around after anR-Other office when the people had enBfcraated him with one to fill.
