TO THE 'TAXPAYERS OP feBAU'
FORT COUNTY. .
Mr. Editor:?Please give me space
throng^ your columns to make a
simple statement. It stoma that
we are having trouble to get some
one to serve us as Treasurer. ?<et
us see wbat the law Is. Chapter
142. Public Laws of North Carolina,
Session 1913, P?ge 227, reads as
follows:
"This Act provides that the Board
of Connty Commissioners may appoint
one or more banks or trust
companies to act as the fiscal agents
of the county, provided they shall
act without compensation other than
such as they may receive by virtue
of having the county funds on deposit
with them."
The act further provides that the
County Commissioners shall before
abolishing the office of Treasurer
pass a resolution to that effect at
least sixty days before any primary
or convention is held for the purpose
of ndmlnatlng a County Treasurer.
I simply make these statements
that you may see that it is not necessary
for us to pay $1200 a year
for what we can get tree. I have
had a personal talk with several of
the banks and they have assured me
r .that they arp willing and ready to
. receive these funds and pay them
out on oounty vouchers the same as 1
they do now on check by'the Treas-j
urer. it does seem to me that when j
our taxes are beooming burdensome
it behoove# us to save evdry dollar
'that we can when we do not Jeopardise
the county's Interest.
, I make these statements that this j
matter- may be so brought before |
the taxpayers that they may advlsp
tbe Board.of County Commissioners'
1 how they feel in reference to abol1
jUhing the office of Treasurer. Thisj
' matter Is berore yotr; take what
' steps you deem necessary.
? ^ W. M. fcHAUNCEY.
> After receiving the above artlclb
f we showed 1t to each of #**anks
1 in the city and askad for a statement
from them. Each of them say that
they would not care to handle the
treascrer's accounts as prorldsd in
! the law above referred and further
