NtK TOUR Oltt. ^ iHWT rnrnm DEMAND FOR BETTER ROADS] 1 No Reason Why Portion of Tax Should Not Be Used in Putting Highways In Better Condition. There Is a growing demand for more and better road making during the autumn"months. In many localities the roads become tilled with deep ruts and tho wheel tracks so depressed during the summer that they collect rains which soon wash them Into gutters which soon ruin the roads for heavy loads and comfortable travel. There is r.o reason why a portion of i- js A Durable 8tone Culvert. the road tax should not bo used for putting tbo highways In good condition for travel, saya Northwestern Agriculturist. The split log drag and other road-making Implements should be put to work before the ground freezes. The outside of the roads should be brought into the center of the track which will establish a cjust that will shed the water, rather than retain rains, which are sure to occur during the late fall and early spring months. Roads having a full-high cen' t are quite sure to remain In good L million during the rainy season of . 11 and spring. Steep hills, where waiter is apt to collect In wheel tracks, shou! I he provided with open gutters on each, side Into which rains may be [liveried with an occasional crest over which water cannot pass. Approaches to br.dges and culverts should be so piled v. 1th earth that vehicles of all kinds may pass over them without hf-ri.ms .Suits and Jam. Honda are much improved when covered with gravel. 71 lfs .s a reason of the year when such work ran bo accomplished at a minimum expense. Every township should own -gravel pits from which road-making material can be cheaply obtained. I'orcroto mr.ds will soon become popular. The same material only should t/e used In making small bridges and diverts. A good quality of Band and jtravel is necessary to make servlceibio concrete. Every farmer should lave a special interest in all roads adloinlng his premises and leading to , narket. Porridge Unjustly Accused. It Is asserted and also denied that porridge wan the cause of Thomas C.trlyle'a ruined digestion. Sir Rich- { ard Qualn Bald porridge had nothing to do v.lth his ruined digestion. Sir ' Richard stated^Jn the British Medical Journal of November 9, 1865, that "the I wretched dyspepsia to which Mr. C*rlyle was subjected was fully accounted \ for by the fact that he was particular- j ly ford of very nasty gingerbread. Many times I havo seen him sitting lb the corner anrbklng a clay pipe and eating this gingerbread." 1 * 'v.....
